Default Thinking of starting Tau

Hi. Thinking of starting Tau. How do they shape up in the current game. My regular opponent will be necrons. Is that a good match up for them?

Tau have a very good Codex, and if you powergame it, it's the most competitive out there.

However, the Codex in general is very well-balanced, and you can run pretty much any build comfortably. Heck, against Necrons even the Fliers are pretty handy, and they're agreed to be the worst unit in it!

The big question is, how do you imagine a Tau army to play? A big, plasma-spewing gunline? A fleet of Transports dropping Fire Warriors all over the place, who start pummeling stuff with Pulse fire? A Cadre of sneaky Stealth Suits guiding a counter-attack of Crisis Suits, who drop in without scatter and tear holes in the enemy vanguard? Drone swarms?

You can run pretty much any flavour you want, and it'll hold its own and work. Personally I change styles a lot, but I've got a soft spot for Battlesuits of all flavours.

I am just getting into tau. The reason I chose them is because I don't like the space marine mythology very much and they look like a proper futuristic race. I only bought the book yesterday so I will have a good look at it and work out which type of army I would enjoy. But I like to play a flexible list and not be tied down to one particular style which sounds like what the tau offer.

I always recommend picking up the battleforce. It is a great way to get into playing Tau (40k in general really) as it gives you a sample of pretty much a bit of everything. Hell, if you're really serious about getting into Tau get 2; it makes a solid army and it's a good value.

this is truth, geting a pair of battleforce's is a fantastic value, and give you a good feel at a decent point level, though i would suggest finding a dedicated markerlight unit. pathfinders can be a good envestment, you get two five man teams in a box. Or a unit of sniper drones with three Farsight marksmen.

Ok. In fantasy often these box sets contain units that I wouldn't always use. Is it not better to write a few lists first or will I always use the contents of the battleforce?

There is nothing in the battleforce that is not useful, and doubling it doesn't change that. Perhaps over time you will amass enough of a force to not need some elements of what you own, but starting out it will all be worthwhile.

Crisis Suits and Fire Warriors can make a solid core for any list. The Piranhas will come in handy for cheap distraction units or anti-tank.

Stealth Team are good Harassars and can be used as extra Anti- tank with a fusion blaster
