Default Piranha drones question

If I have a Piranha squadron of 3, when detached, do the drones count in pairs or solo? Also, can they merge into one unit...?

As the Piranhas count as one unit due to being a Squadron, the Drones do as well. This lets you offload a pretty sizable squad of Drones for harassing. Remember though, they can't Score or Deny!

More importantly they don't give away victory points! Great 'free' little unit IMO.

The way this works all depends on how the unit is organized in your army list. So in this case, a squadron of three piranhas would drop all drones into the same 'unit' of 6 drones. If it were instead arranged in three one fish squadrons, each piranha would drop it's two drones into 3 separate units.

This had be confused for awhile as well, as the piranha is the only squadron vehicle we have in our 'dex. The original unit is what counts. So what tactical flexibility you might lose in putting 3 fish in one squadron (difficulties with model placement and range), might be made up for by having that one interference unit of 6 drones.

Thanks for the input. Another Q: do the detached drones still count as the same unit as the Piranhas, meaning, can I send them to engage another unit than the one the Piranhas are shooting at, or not...?

They're a separate unit and can have separate targets. More to the point, they can line up in front of the Piranhas to block Assaults.

You can pull some fun shenanigans with them. A trick I used to do was to deploy them as far forward as possible. First turn, Flat Out 30" and blockade your opponent's units in their own Deployment. Do this well and you can stall them long enough for other elements of your army to grab a strong hold on the rest of the table.
