Default Ethereals, Firewarriors, the pocket defence

I'm thinking about an old fashioned Tau list.
In each corner of my DZ, an ethereal, and three full Fire Warrior squads, perhaps even a 2 man broad side team?
That leaves 600pt for more mobile (objective denying) force

Possibly a couple of fish to redeploy firewarriors.

Workable?

Handy unless the enemy simply sits outside the 15" killzone. Especially if it's someone who can spam blasts on them.

Hey guys, GMAN is back! Anyway, I'd go with some heavy units of some sort. Perhaps a riptide?

CG
A Guard Basilisk list would no doubt cause problems, although I can disperse if needs be.
16" stops me using the extra shot power, but I can walk forward a bit, or sit with FNP

GMan
Yeah theres 662pts for Elite/FA and my one one remaining heavy choice, minus drones and suit gear.

There's also the issue of having a heck of a lot of S5 AP5, but not much else. Necrons are an army I can see as being tough to beat with this sort of list.

I'm fairly new to Tau, 6 full but unupgraded fire warrior squads seems a bargain, at 1800pts anyway.
Even with two Ethereals to babysit its under 750

That leaves 1050 for mobility and vehicle killing.

It can be finessed of course, but I just dont want to be stuck with two min size troop choices as the only way to compete.

I'm just advising. Balance is often the best way to go. Especially with how fragile Fire Warriors are, and with how much your opponents could take at that points level.

Fire warriors tend to be rather expensive for target saturation. Don't get me wrong, 72 firewarriors backed by ethereals will be putting out alot of hurt. Most lists at this level don't have this many either because of the aforementioned fragility, or the fact that fire warriors tend to be so efficient at killing things, that if they are still standing there likely will be nothing left that they can damage.

Considering that you'll likely be spending at least 120 - 200 pts on units providing markerlights, possibly 100 - 150 more on an aegis and some anti-flier capability, that 1050 pts narrows down fairly quickly. It certainly can work, and against armies that are not vehicle based it can work well. But our codex has far more flexible units for area denial, and sitting in two corners all day can only be so fulfilling to you and your opponents.

I'm incredibly happy that the debate over how many FW to field is no longer "well, there is no debate. You take six, and hide them in reserves inside a devilfish. That was a stupid question. Let's talk about how great deathrains are!"

I think the best thing about the new Codex is that everyone has a place and a purpose.
