Default Kroot hounds more pointless now?

In the old codex, you could have only Kroot hounds, who, by being Beasts, have the Fleet rule. This means a 6'' + 12'' assault movement unit with decent Initiative.

Now, you can't have only Kroot hounds and, since no other Kroot units share the Beast/Fleet abilitiy, this automatically can't be used with a Shaper, other Kroots and Krootoxes.

Unless ... you field 10 Kroots (the minimum) and 10 Kroot hounds, manage to get the 10 Kroots killed off and then get a Clean Beast unit.

Right?

Well, it's been 8 years since the different types of kroot were allowed to be taken separately... so you would think you'd be used to that by now... but kroot hounds are actually more useful than ever within the context of 6th edition.

Kroot in 6th edition had hit the nerf wall so hard they made fire warriors look good. The new codex juggled all that around and shifted the role of the kroot from close combat harassment and bubble wrap to long range harassment and bubble wrap. Now, kroot hounds are the Tau's only ability to fight in close combat... but that's not why we take them. We now want a kroot hound because it grants the whole unit acute sense and I5 to react to initiative checks. Are they useful to you as close combat monsters? No. Are they useful as a 5 point squad upgrade to give you I5 for initiative checks and acute sense when you outflank? Yes.

Kroot were the only Tau Close combat earlier as well. Especially Before Overwatch.
Otherwise, OK.

Kroot as a whole were Tau's (limited) close combat ability, now it's just kroot hounds. But since we're not looking for close combat anyways, it's not that important.
