Default Competition Poll of the Month - Captions

After a lengthy discussion over a mug of hot cocoa by the fireside in Contest HQ, we've decided to try out something new. Every month (or fortnight, if we feel like it) we're going to put up a poll on a Contest-related issue where the members will have a chance to influence the main contest rules, which are going to be properly updated soon. The winning option will be written into the rules, so now's your opportunity to have some say into what we're doing!

Captions - Yes or No?

We've never allowed captions before, but the suggestion has been raised once or twice, and we think it's certainly an interesting idea.

Options:

1) Yes - Unit Type
The 'caption' would consist of the Army and Unit Name of the entry only.

2) Yes - Short Caption (10 words max)
The caption would consist of a short caption or title of the entry.

3) Yes - Short Paragraph (100 words max)
This would allow the entrant to describe the model or modelling/painting process in greater detail, or submit a few lines of fluff related to the model.

4) No
The rules would stay as is - no caption allowed.

[hr]

You can vote for more than one option if you think that more than one type of caption should be allowed.

Feel free to discuss the relative merits and disadvantages of each option in the thread!

Shouldn't the model speak for it's self? I think if anything unit type could work. Anything besides that is too much.

I think a caption contest where HQ pick one model out and everyone has to come up with the best caption for that model would be better than actually captioning their own models.
Allowing army and unit type descriptions would be okay as it is just a label, but detailing paint schemes and everything else is just pointless really imo.

A picture speaks a thousand words...

Also, I think it should just be the description of what it is in the codex.

I think that it would be fun for some contests like HQ or possibly vehicles, but it does take away from the painting aspect. You could test out a contest with 2 different styles of entry, one with captions and one without.

I think it's interesting, but I wouldn't want to exclude a good painter because they can't write good fluff.

Yes, for unit type alone. Other than that, I vote no.

A model should be able to stand on it's own, without some detailed description. Our contests are mainly painting/converting, no need for an unnecessary detail.

I voted no, as the contests are designed to see who the best painter/converter is. Leave the writing to the story contests. Someone with a horribly painted mini shouldn't beat another well painted one because they write better fluff, and no one needs to know what unit it is; we all play 40k and should know Necron warriors from Space Marine scouts.

I like the idea of a caption contest though where you try to come up with the best caption for a picture or diorama.

I would love people going into the modelling/painting process in greater detail. I like hearing about that stuff.

You could always just ask them once the competition has finished and the votes are in.
