Default Winter Wordslinger [RULES]

When it's cold and wintery outside, there's nothing better than curling up by the fireside and reading a good book. Right?

Wrong.
Recent scientific studies* have shown that writing a book actually releases a hormone in your brain called awesomerone which'll perform the dual function of keeping you warm and leaving you feeling awesome for at least a whole week.

Now, us folks at Contests HQ are firm believers in everything awesome, so we've decided to promote this new research by giving you the opportunity to pit your keyboards against each other in an epic battle of the words. This contest is open to short stories set in the 40k or WHFB universe.

Dates:
  • Entries can be submitted via a PM to Dra'Tuisich-Novae from January 10[sup]th[/sup] till February 19[sup]th[/sup].
  • Voting will take place between February 20[sup]th[/sup] and February 27[sup]th[/sup].
  • Winners will be announced on the 28[sup]th[/sup] of February.

Prizes:

1st Place - 10pts
2nd Place - 5pts
3rd Place - 2pts

(The top 3 all receive official TO winners seals as well).

Rules:

  • The story may not have been entered in previous competition.
  • The story must be between 750 and 1000 words
  • The story should be a stand-alone piece of work - do not assume anyone will have read anything else you may have written

*May not exist

When you say 40K universe does it include BFG and Necromunda elements, such as starship, Rogue Traders and Hivers?? Or is it limited to elements of the 40k (and apocalypse/Planetstrike/Cities of Death) Universe?

I have a few ideas, but I want to make sure they are set in the appropriate (sub)setting.

Anywhere in the 40k universe. Hive worlds and starships and everything else are all part of it.

Crikey! This crazy clown causes commotion like the coming of Christ. Contained in a circle corrupted by crackheads and carnal cravings, he creates no concession to callous cheaters concentrating on nought but cock. Certainly, still a curious and cordial cavalier in the countenance of crazed cads, curs and creeps who condemn courtesy as something corny. No cloud could collapse his crushing crescendo of comical crowing and crimson coiffure. This conjecture on culture comes circumlocutive, consequently...

I'm almost finish.

How strict is the 1000 word upper limit?

I'm not planning to go over it, but just in case.

I'm at 398 right now and counting. That upper limit of 1000 is looming in the distance and approaching quicker than I'd like.

I know I'm a 900 word now and will either have to trim or do a fishtail ending.

I slammed into that limit like a freight train hitting a concrete bollard. My story was just getting started and I had to slam on and say "right! No more story!"

I think I got the right mesure between setting the mood/describing and pushing the story forward.

Not easy with low word count.

Story finished but at 1102 words...will have to edit some.

Dang.

Edit 2:
Well shaved 102 words and sent it.

If you could confirm reception that would be great.
