Default Public Karma System Idea

Ive been going around the site, and after looking around on posts and profiles, i thought of something, "What if there was a system that shows what other fellow TO members think of a person?"

I purpose a system that i like to call a Public Karma System. its separate from the normal karma system, and its for anyone to use to rate other members. All a member would need to do is go to the profile page of the person they want to rate and select to submit a Karma Rating. You can choose between a positive or negative rating, and a reason for your rating should be required. At this point, having a mod check the submission so its not outrageous would probably be a good idea.

I hope you consider adding this to the forums, i believe it would be a great improvement to the TO community.

I don't think there'd be a point. There is the ability to flag posts for mods to give a tick to, so Karma is a combo of mods and members liking things.

Actually, there's something implemented like this on a few sites I'm a member of, but the problem is, it is very easy to abuse. I do like the idea, and always have, but... the chance of abuse is just too high.

Yeah, the main problem is that it would quickly become meaningless.

I agree. i feel like someone could just bone someone by making up bogus resons why they suck and destroying their public rating. TO resolve that the moderators would have to moniter very closely which would make it basically the same as normal karma, no?

good idea tho

If it was limited to one public karma per person or something, that could work, but it seems a bit complicated. Also.... what is the point? It's like a bit of a popularity contest, as opposed to the mod karma, which is given out for things you actually do, rather than if someone dislikes you or likes you...

It would encourage the expansion of the enclave, which is a big no-no as far as I am concerned.

well i would love to get rid of my -1 karma i've had forever. in my karma log it doesn't even say why i got the -1 its also not like i haven't done something karma worthy. maybe not in a single post but i clearly have interacted and helped the community here.

The Public Karma is basically a reputation system where members show how popular they are. This would simply be a showing of popularity and although in theory it could help i don't really see how.
This system would end up being only for popularity so i don't see the point of it myself.

I agree with the vast majority of what's been posted already. Such a system would be easily vulnerable to abuse and could easily result in endless arguments as members bicker amongst themselves about why they've applauded/smited each other. So, good in theory but I just can't see it working in practice.
