Default Flagging a topic for locking

I know that you can flag a post if it si good or bad. Would flagging a topic for locking be a worthwhile idea? It might stop topics getting out of hand and make it easier for moderators.

Yes, you can flag a topic for a lock.

Some peopel use it to close their own thread;
Other to lock thread that has degenerated into something else silly or irrelevent
etc.

You haven't even been a mod two weeks yet Boneguard and your telling members when they can report things? :P

But seriously though, Boneguard is right, feel free to report posts for locks, sticking etc. Just remember it's at the mods descretion though and if they don't feel it's nessecary or appropriate, they won't act

One thing I find annoying is that, when a topic has answered thoroughly the original question/comment posted, some people feel the urge to call for a mod to lock the topic. However, often, if the topic is still alive, there is still valid discussion occurring that is at least mostly on-topic.

What's worse is that mods often still lock these threads as though there's some great threat in continuing a worthwhile discussion just because the original question is answered and the discussion isn't 100% on-topic. Most of the time when it's time for a topic to die, it will die naturally. Some people want to prematurely kill a topic instead of letting it linger and die on its own.

Can we get that to not happen please?

I agree with you there Kaffl, locking should only really be done if there is no way for the topic to be dragged back on topic or there was flame bait posted. If it gets to the point where there are only one sentence posts being posted, then I think it's time for a lock, wouldn't you agree?

I tend to lock a topic when there is a fair amount of off topic posts in succession. Locking a topic sends a message much better then simply deleting posts, and sometimes deleting posts can leave unwieldy holes in threads, resulting in them not being posted in by members anyways.

That being said, it is not right to request a lock on your topic simply because your argument has taken a turn for the worse.

But As stated, it can be done, and some like Zenny like to request a lock for him own topic once he has is answer to avoid treadomancy.
