Default I'm not exactly sure where to post this...

First off, I am not complaining or anything associated with it. I have a perfectly, completely legitimate question.

I was recently told that we're not supposed to post points values for units (I posted the points values for Gue'vesa and was told that it was infringing on copyrighted material). How far does this go? We post points values when we post army lists, and people talk about not wasting 3 points on a blacksun filter (that is not a personal opinion). Is there a certain line we aren't supposed to cross, or do I just trust my instincts?

Please advise.

It's more unit costs I think, as opposed to upgrades.

I believe the way around this has been to get creative at how you talk about it. Like the price of a Broadside is close to 29 blacksun filters. Get what I'm saying?

Yeah, thanks.

Although that has the potential to get pretty annoying.

Perhaps, but I always found it funny to see what people could come up with. I think Zen Ai even went so far as to declare something was "twice the amount of a rhino minus 4 black sun filters." It's creative and in a hobby like ours, creativity is always good.

It is not a hard and fast rule. We just don't want to see people posting full statlines, or fully-itemized army lists. GW goes after forums when people are posting enough that a guest wouldn't need the codex any more.

The way I see it, posting up a unit where you say how much every upgrade costs isn't acceptable. Because then, like Khanaris said, people who don't have the relevant Codex probably won't even need it to make an army list. What is acceptable would be posting the total pts cost of each unit in your army list, including upgrades. That way anyone who doesn't know the pts cost of each item can't accurately work it out. Although some people don't even do that and simply post the total pts cost of their army list. Either of those two options are viable and nobody usually complains about them.
I would argue that people shouldn't say how much an item costs [like a Blacksun Filter] even in general discussion, just to stay on the safe side. People who don't know the pts cost without using a reference can easily be informed by being told phrases like: 'just a few points' or 'almost as much as a Space Marine'.

Hope that clears things up .

There was also a very short time on the Tau forums (as a bad joke on April Fools iirc), when people were posting points costs as being equal to X Frag/Photon Grenades.

I draw the line at "ubiquitous items"
Saying something like: for 5 points a D-Pod could give you.
Or: You could save 10 points on that build by removing X item.

There are some odd cases, such as sniper drone teams, which you can't help posting the base cost due to them being completely un-upgradeable. Same for most special characters too. We just have to let these slide, as you can't get the total on your army lists otherwise. Some of us still see this as a grey area though.

Firefly is pretty much made of Awesome, Funny, and Aww. Sometimes simultaneously. We'd better stop before we quote the entire script.

Well, if you're smart, and have enough time, then you possibly could figure out what everything cost. Of course, the BA rhino for assault squads screws that up, but the BA codex is free anyhow.

You can find the points costs for quite a few things on games workshop's own site. I really don't see the point of this rule. So long as nobody is publishing the lists, what's the problem? Other forums talk about points much more openly.

The problem is the forums and sites that have gotten in trouble with GW in the past over posting points values.

I'd be amazed if any sensible forum was allowing open posting of individual points costs :

Its to avoid people getting all the info online, instead of buying the dex - and if you're smart, you can get it online anyway.

I personally would rather not have the heavy breathing of GW on us.
