Default With regard to the "spelling", or lack of on these boards...

I am pretty new on these boards, and really am only here as the last forum i was on closed (portent). However, on the last two boards I was on, Critical Hit, and Portent I ammassed a few thousand posts in all. I was respected on CH, and getting to that stage on Portent. One thing that has struck me more than once on the TO boards is the constant attrocious spelling and complete and utter abuse of, and contempt for the english language. On the last two boards I was on, there was a huge effort made to use proper understandable english.
There were several reasons:
"l33t" and "txt" talk are NOT cool. On forums they just make you look like an idiot.
Not everyone speaks english as a first language, and they do have trouble with the horrendous grammer used.

I would ask those in charge of TO, owners and moderators to implement some form of system to use the english language as it was meant to be used.
On CH, the system used was CAUSE (campaign for accurate use of sensible english) and I would love to see a system implememted here.

By and away, the spelling here is the worst thing about TO. Implement it and a lot more people will take interest in the forums. Because i can guarantee you a bunch of people have already gone through this site, found the immature and infantile abuse of the english language, and have since turned their backs on it.

I am not an elitist, or purist with contempt for all those around me. OK, i can understand why someone with dyslexia would not be able to fully abide, or someone from germany with only secondary school english, but for the americans, ozzies, brits and whoever else here, it does not portray you in a good light. I am not campaigning for grammatic perfection. I dont start all my sentences with capital letters, I dont stick in comas, apostraphies (jesus, i dont even know how to spell that word) and a dozen other faults, but at least i do type my sentences clearly and legibly. I would ask for others to do the same.

None can step before them, they are the first, proud in their strength and jealous of their renown. As always we're looking to improve TO, and some people's grammar is something that I think could be improved upon. However, there's already a spell checker enabled on these forums, if people don't want to try and type properly then how can we force them? (Non-rhetorical)

Sorry Deadnight, I couldn't help but chuckle a bit to myself as I read your post and looked at your Avatar. *It's almost like an Old Commissar getting up and telling his troops to `shape up or ship out'!

Spelling is an issue on boards today. *Unfortunately, MSN chat boards are probably the single greatest enemy of correct spelling, sentence structure and word use of the English language today. *It is somewhat comparable to Yiddish which used to be the greatest nemesis to the introduction of the modern version of the Hebrew language.

Leet is goofy in my opinion and its' use is just plain laziness on the part of the writer. *I look upon the use of Leet as something the younger folk get into through no great fault of their own. *Fortunately the good news is that most of them grow out of it.

I don't claim to be perfect in my writtings mind you; however I do know one great secrets about writting that I will share with you. *Write and spell correctly so you don't `step' on your message! *You want to get a point across? *Fine, then write it clearly!

I hope and trust we see more posts by you, Deadnight!!

Best Regards,

personally I don't think its that much of a problem. As long as the point has gotten across what harm is there?

In that case, so is sex. Therefore, pornstars and prostitutes are professional athletes.

I can see what you're saying, and although Deadnight's post is exaggerated, there is a point. I don't think there is much of a problem, although some people's posts are hard and annoying to read.

It is a HUGE problem. I want to read a post, and understand it, and not have to squint and work my way through dozens of "luk ere, did is how i doz my spelling. LOL. wArEz RuLEZ! U r all pwned!" I like to read a post and see clear and consise english. Besides, talking like that is incredibly immature, and infantile.

TauOnline: I gather you have a spell checker but that really only works for those who want to check their spelling. If theres some kind of spelling guidelines in the forum rules, like CH had it will make a difference. On CH, everytime we had a new perosn join who was full of LOLs, l33t and z's for s's and everything spelled phoenetically or for "c00lness", we'd all welcome him by saying "Dude, your welcome to the community! Be polite and everyone will be fine. But seriously, watch your spelling. Type clearly because as a community, we really don't appreciate l33t. And then everyone's happy". Invariably, they'd respond with "Yeah, sure no problem. I'll watch it" and then there'd be no more problems.

Ah, nostalgia! Critical Hit, how i miss it! :'(

And TauOnline, I apologise if I'm being rude, but I'm not exaggerating as you politely put it. THe spelling in some posts here is chronic.

I know what you're saying; 'leet' and 'n00b' type grammar is incredibly annoying, although I haven't noticed much of it here. Could you PM me a few examples of members who post with bad grammar? We do take action with people who's grammar is below the standard expected, although I haven't noticed much of it..

Also I don't think you're being rude, although I can't really find member's who consistently use bad grammar..

Nor can I. The odd one crops up, but they seem to either shape up or quit. There are some posters who have an "MSN" style of posting, but that too should stop once it is pointed out we do not accept it... or when they are warned for it.

Deadnight:

I agree that it is a much nicer environment when we have a good standard of language, but you may want to consider the ages of a lot of the posters as well that English may not be their mother tongue. Although, I give you that total lack of punctuation followed by internet-short hand is a very hard language to read on websites.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's horrible here, as we haven't had a rash of it compared to other sites.

The only thing I actually would advocate, is the Spell Check feature we have. It's right next to the "Post" button and takes very little time to use. Otherwise, I see no real issues on the board

Just my thoughts on that
