Default "IMPORTANT" Name.......

I just thought of somthing.

as i do not collect tau the only place i regularly post is off topic and scenarios (i think) and i also have too wait ages too get a reply to one of my post in another board. so i had a thought, call the forums somthing different, (like what eldar online did)
as i believe people only see it as a 'Tau' only forums (i know i did when i first saw it). it would increse board activity and make some memebers feel more obliged too post and not have too worry about w8ing for a reply (like someone was having a battle in a day and i took 2 for someone too reply)

feel free to reply as you wish

Keep it as Tauonline. Identity is important.

The reason it's increasing is twofold, IMO (and as a Staffer there, I know whereof I speak )

- The main reason is that the server is working properly again, we don't get Server Errors all the time anymore. This makes the site more attractive to join, hence more people are registering than used to under the bugged EO and 40k.ca forums.

- The other reason is that the site was already well-known and has a very large membership. Sites with large memberships do attract more members than those will smaller ones, a fact of life.

Personally, I think Tauonline should stay as it is for at least another year. I don't think it's big enough yet to 'go generic'. What they should do instead is advertise more with other sites, and make a point of saying that while they are specialists in Tau, they also cater for all the other armies too.

We are called Tau Online because we are mainly a Tau site- however to increase the traffic to the site, we put up non-Tau articles. At the moment, Tau Online is arguably the best Tau site on the net (?) although, even though we cater for all armies, if we changed our name slightly, we'd no longer be the best at the field we're aiming at.

At the moment people's views of Tau Online is generally along the lines of "Probably the best Tau site, also has stuff for other armies" However changing our name to cater for all armies, would change the opinion to "Fairly good 40K site" and, at the moment, I'd prefer the first opinion.

Being strong in one field (Tau) is much better than being fairly good in all fields. 40K Online changing their name will probably be a good thing for them, but they've been going since October 2000, and so they've built up their support and people's opinions are stronger for them. They've been running for over 4 years.

Tau Online, on the other hand, has only really been going since early 2004. Although Tau Online was started in mid-2002, it was only run on the webspace my ISP given me, and the forums weren't hosted by us. Only since early 2004 has Tau Online really started being seen as a serious website, as this was when I started paying for Tau Online, with a paid domain name, paid hosting and forums hosted by us. If Tau Online changed to cater for all armies, at the moment I feel it'd be a bad move.

Also saying all this, is it really that hard to find out that TO isn't just a Tau website? Go to the homepage. The title says:
"Tau Online- A website for Warhammer 40K fans"

and the first three sentences say:
"Welcome to Tau Online. This site is aimed primarily at the Tau race of Warhammer 40K, but it isn't only about them. We cater for more or less all armies."

One of the first things people should read is that Tau Online isn't just for Tau. A quick trip to the other-armies tactics section shows that, with 11 tactics for other armies.

There's also the time and money factor- changing Tau Online's name would mean a new domain name and I'd have to change many pages.

This post isn't ruling out the possibility of a name change, it's just saying that it's too early to change name.
Regards,
Tau Online

Hmmm... No I disagree, Sites are well known for the actually content of the site and in TO's case the forum has absolutely nothing more tauish than anything. As far as I'm concerned the only thing tauish is the battle reports and other stuff etc. on the main site. If you were to add more stuff for the other races and change the name to smt different but not similar to everything else then it will attract more traffic.

IMO that's one of the reason eldar online changed it's name. (the fact that the site would have benefited more from being a more 40k oriented site than just eldar.

And Like you said TO. about the thing where it says this site isn't primarily.....
Well (IMO) that doesn't make people think that it's not only for tau it makes people think that the site IS PRIMARILY FOR TAU but there's just some other little boards stuck aways in the corner for the other races.

But apparently you don't. I'll tell you straight - small sites benefit from specializing, it draws in more people. Generic sites need to either be very old (like Portent) or already large before they 'convert' (like EO). Small generic sites do not do as well as small specialist sites, fact of life.

Right - Eldaronline benefited because, along with the sister site 40k.ca, it was already massive. Tauonline isn't at that stage yet. It needs to get better known before any change is made.
