Default About Karma, Ranks, Doubleposts, Avatars, and bandwidth theft. Also quotes!

Karma is explained here. It's not much more that an aid for staff but it can also be used as an early indicator of poster quality. After reaching certain levels of negative karma, warnings and bans happen.

Please note, a few -karmas is not a bad thing, and some posters have failry balanced karma. But as they increase, it's a hint to try to mend your ways.

The rankings, such as 'kroot warrior' are merely an indicative of how many posts you have made. It does not reflect the member's post quality: a member can be an ethereal, yet still have lower post quality than a kroot warrior.

EDIT: Go Here for some detailed rank information

Avatars can be set here (I hope!). Click the link and follow instructions to set up an avatar for yourself. If at all possible, either upload your own, use your own webspace, or one of the pre-selected ones: many website owners take a dim view of what is called 'bandwidth theft' and some even introduce counter-measures such as replacing the image you linked to with another one. This is because the image you link to is being loaded by people not reading thier site, and taking up a bandwitdh of around 100Kb. That can all add up, and that costs them MONEY.

Also, if you forget something in a post, or want to change a post, there is a button called 'modify' that allows you to eidt the post. Use this, rather than posting twice. Obviously, if you are responded to, you can post again .

This information can actually be found elsewhere, mostly in annoucements, but due to recent examples of people not finding it (or not knowing it was there to look for) this sticky has been made.

Hey, Mage, I'm quoting two people, how do I do that without you using your smg to blow the extra posts I make away?!
There's a button called the quote button at the top left of each post. You click that, and you quote that post. Hopefully you already knew that part...

Also, you can use the '[quote*][/*quote]' brackets manually to insert a quote, or, when posting, click 'insert quote' which is a small button just abot the Azn and Afro smiley's, and below the text size button. It looks like a little speech bubble with lines in it.

Lastly, whilst posting, the last ten posts should be at the bottom of the part where you enter the text of your post. In the top left hand of each of the last ten or so previous posts, there is blue text saying 'insert quote' which will quote the relevant post for you.

If you're quoting multiple people, click the quote button by the post you wish to quote, copy the resulting quote, then hit back (on most browsers, it's a green arrrow pointing left in the top left of the window) , quote the next post, past the previous quote above or below the new quote, and then insert the relevant replys to each quote below the quote, and above the other quote (So that the message read quote-your respons-nextquote-response to nextquote) . For any more than two quotes, copy and past the quotes as before, BUT copy and paste both quotes to add to the next new one.

Hey, two questions.

1. I don't understand what an "Avatar" is, the link took me to profile manegment.

2. How many posts do you have to make to go up a rank?

Thank you, the site is awsome.

-Eddie

1- An avatar is the image shown beside your posts (in my case, of Jack Bauer, with the head of a panda andChristopher Eccleston floating about, with the sillhouette of Status Quo sitting there With a rifle, and the three demonic entities that are Christopher Eccleston's disembodied head, a panda, and a red mage, ordering Jack to kill everyone he sees. Status Quo merely stand there laughing.) and you set you avatar there. It shoudl say 'personaliszed picture' in there, and from there, you can use a set of pre-made avatars , link to your own, or upload your own. An avatr should be no more than 120 x 120 pixels, and no more than about 50kb at the very most.

2- go to http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=223.0 for further rank based information.

Over here the bandwidth is free, it's flatrate all the way! *yey*

But... Does ppl abroad pay for the information-flow?! Kindof like the old days with modem-traffic? Here end-users, as well as big ones (ISPs, etc) all pay flatrates... The more guaranteed flowrates the higher the flatrate cost per mounth is...

(I have a 10Mbitps wire solution with unlimited traffic, as it should be, paying close to nothing per mounth! )

Well, basically, I don't know how it works in Sweden, but I'm pretty sure you need to pay to host a large site. It does not cost you, the user, anything, but it costs the website owner money: Sites generally are alloted a set amount of bandwidth. If a site keeps having people steal it's bandwidth (every time an image is loaded) then it winds up with a 505 bandwidth exceeded error at some point, perhaps in the middle of the month, and it doesn't get back up for a month unless the owner pays for more bandwidth. You can see how that's a problem. Some Internet Service Providers limit the amount a person can load in thier connection per month, but YOU don't pay. It's just the site owners, and it's more or less viewed in the same way as theft if you take an image form another website at hotlink it to where you want to use it: most people won't mind if you ask if you can take an image and host it on your own space, but they won't be happy if you just take their image.

Exactly, and that's why it's better to ask if it's an image you'll use a lot. You can copy and paste the occasional image but it's just good manners towards not just this site but to other sites not to hijack people's bandwidth.

And if you want, you can always create a photobucket account for that sort of thing. It comes in very handy.

Imageshack is another good one, I don't think you even need an account to use it.

You don't, no, but that means if you lose the link you will have to upload it again- you can't store all your pictures in one place like with photobucket or some others..
