I recently could not sign on due to the fact I changed my nickname and assumed it was my username. I would like to post this as a warning for all those that find themselves locked out of the site embarrissingly.

But due to the obvious inconvience this causes. Could it be possible to change that your username is always your nickname?

Thanks for the warning to other members And while it is possible to lock the username, it wouldn't make sense as then two people could have the same username hence it'd cause problems on these forums (i.e. when logging in etc). There is a forgotten password feature which I'd be inclined to suggest over locking the username to display name to be honest.

You will always be able to log in using your username (the one you signed up with, the one you can't change). In most cases, you will still be able to use your display name to log in, as long as it doesn't contain any weird or strange characters etc that wouldn't normally be allowed.

While possible, it isn't a necessary measure to take, as there isn't really a problem here... you will always be able to use your username to login, regardless of what your display name is set to. Using the display name will work most of the time, but not always.

Actually, it appears you can only log in with the username, and not the display name, at least for me. And I have no odd characters.
