What are you up against? Crons? Marines? what? Your opponent will change how i would help you.
Give HQ a Cyclic Ion Blaster, and make him BS5 either by giving him a targeting array or promoting him to a shas'o so that you will have 7 shots that hit on 2+, and any cyclics that roll a 6 to wound are AP1 (Trust me 6s come up quite a fair bit more than you expect) Pathfinder teams MUST have a devilfish, so take them out. Use spare points along with taking out the kroot squads (If your looking for high AP values, why take assaulters that allow even 6+ armour saves in close combat - useless. Take the points from the kroot and the pathfinders when you drop both and get yourself a Hammerhead with Ion cannon for some S7, AP3, heavy 3 action. Give this head the same upgrades as your other head has. Zambia

I liked the previous poster's suggestion of the CIB, but I disagree about upgrading him to a Shas'O.
I strongly favor the TA upgrade instead... saves a good bit of points (especially important in low point games). You also don't need Target Lock as you cannot seperate shots of just 1 unit (Target Lock lets 2 different units that are together spread out their shots... but each unit has to fire at 1 target). And since this is a small 800pt game I would dump the drones too. If you want to add a little survivability without making your HQ a point dump, just add Stims. And an absolute must... Multi-tracker & Disruption Pods on both Hammerheads... absolute must. As far as I'm concerned they should just come as standard equipment. And if bikers are a big worry of yours, I would make my list a lot more mobile. Between your 2 un-mechinized FW teams and your Sniper Squad, you are very static. I would suggest dumping the Sniper Squad and maybe adding a Devilfish w/Dis Pod to one of those FW squads. Ideally you would like to Mechanize both FW teams... maybe instead you could switch one FW squad out for a decent sized Kroot squad. With infiltrate they are a hair more mobile and they are definately cheaper. Maybe, if points magically materialize from savings it would also be nice to add a Crisis suit for more firepower & mobility. |

okay rudog, lets talk about my choice of Shas'o. The reason I personally run a Shas'o is becuase he doesnt need a targeting array, which means i can give him a shield generator without reducing his accuracy. Sure, shield drones might make your commander safe from say a predator tank or any other single shot weapon (meltagun, lascannon, bright lance) but you say that you will be against ALL types of enemies.
Okay lets say your commander is NOT a Shas'o, so therefore he has a targeting array as his 3rd hardpoint, and he has 2 shield drones. Your opponent is orks. He fields a looted wagon with a S8, AP3 large blast, which will wound on 2+, and you will get 1 wound on each drone and 1 on crisis suit (unless he rolls a 1) meaning that instant death to your crisis suit (no invun save because targeting array was taken) and because he dies your drones die too whether you make their 4+ save or not;. Okay lets say your opponent is marines, and a devastator squad including 3 lascannons shoots at you. Allocating wounds, you still have an instant death to your commander. Lets say your against Dark Eldar, with their 100pt vehicles wielding 3 dark lances, which again mean instant death to commander if all 3 hit. Shield drones are very good at soaking up fire, but against instant death weaponry, do not chance your commander. Make him a Shas'o, give him the free BS5, an extra wound and extra Initiative and WS, and give him a shield generator - because your commander is meant to be the spearhead of the Tau Cadre. Rudog, not meaning any offense, but im just reinforcing my decision on why he should take a Shas'o. Staying alive after turn 1 is worth the few extra points :P Zambia

No offense taken. Everyone has their opinions and reasons.
I do tend to favor lower point models that I can afford to lose over higher, but I do see the benefit in games over 1000pts to have a solid lone wolf that can soak up the fire and dish it out. And the CIB does have a tendancy to put you in harms way. I just thought he needed to find some points to give his Ionhead a MT and at least one of his FW teams a devilfish. To me the points just seemed tight at 800. |

Yer i see where your coming from, but if the points are tight like this, i would then take the Shas'el, but drop the targeting array for shield generator IF you find yourself up against dark eldar, orks with a looted wagon or marines with a devastator squad. Otherwise take the Targeting array.
