Ok so I'm starting 40k army # 7 (0 finished 1 sold off) and it's Tau.. so here's my first stab at a 2k list (with a bit of help from a red-shirt). I have 2500 and 3k versions of this list too if this doesn't get shot to pieces (be gentle) ;D

with the 2 FW with 2 markerlight drones you could have a full squad of PF instead. the cost of 1 markerlight drone is 2.5 pathfinders

well not entirely.. if i drop everything but the bonding knives from those 2 shas'ui and add a full pathfinder squad with no upgrades and nothing extra on the 'fish i'm 7 points over... i guess i could drop the knives too but i wouldn't like running the pathfinders around in a "stock" devilfish

well another suggestion is if you run a squadron of piranhas don't give them so many up grades not really worth it if any give target arrays and maybe the seeker missles. that will free up some pts or even possible drop one of them.

I'll offer some suggestions that may or may not be of interest. Good to see you making a start with Tau. Your list could use paring down - some streamlining. Let's start at the top.

You went with a fairly high cost commander, but not prohibitively so. Are you wading this guy into CC? You have a lot of points invested in the shield gen AND stim injector. They are a littel redundant. I'd take neither. He is your idependent character (IC) and cannot be targetted unless you put him out front at close range with one else ahead of him. At least try to part with one of these options.

I need to look at my codex here. In the previous codex you could not access all of that wargear with a shas'ui. Not sure about the HWMT, and two marker drones is just very expensive. A general rule with Tau is that taking grenades of any kind are usually points that should be spent elsewhere. Grenades are oriented towards CC, a place your FWs should not be.

Two sets of grenades! Costly. The goal is never to need grenades. A carbine on your leader? You could easily lose 50-60 points here.

You could get away with making the leader a "team leader" Save 5 points as there is no real need for shas'vre. I noticed your pattern of focussing on protection. Shield generators on all of your suits. :P Dare I say overkill. You would be better served to replace them with multi trackers so you can fire both weapons each turn. Your suit J-S-J is your best protection for the suits.

I see why you want your marker drones. It just seems that you have picked an expensive way to do it. Maybe use 3 piranhas starting you to see how they work. I just think they are too expensive to use a bunch of them.

You really have a lot of wargear that prevents you from buying more firing/scoring units. The grenades and shield generators come to mind first. You have 2 marker drones per FW squad. Points simply add up very fast. I note that you have no other heavy support in 2000 points. No hammerhead, broadside, skyray. You do have sniper drones, but I'd want at least 2 heavies at 2000 points, and typically 3. it's in my 1500 point list that I can easily use only 2 heavies. I could suggest more specifics, but I'll let you consider this much first.

Ok I've re-vamped the list a bit (based on some advice here and over at wargamerau).. i hope this is better since i'm not sure i want to buy much more than this (i hate having unused stuff)... I plan to take the final version of this list to 3k and plan to add vespids, a HH and the sniper drones i removed plus my 4 stealths and a possible pathfinder squad at that level to use my other 'fish... i'll list what i own at the end...

Also this is not a tourney list.. i hate making hard core lists and try to only play fun friendly games...
