Default Grand Tournament - 40k doubles. Help please!

All,

I turn to you all for your counsel re suggestions for an all conquering Tau 'combat patrol' list. I need to generate x2 400pt lists, which follow the standard combat patrol rules (page 182 4th edition rules).

As always, I'd be grateful for any pointers, tips, suggestions or samples of lists, which you think will or have worked in the past.

cheers,

Loki.

You teaming up with another Tau player, or just have to have two armies?
Any chance you could give us the rules for the doubles tournaments or a link to the organisers page for the rules?

Well for one this should be in the army list board but here are a couple.

Mechanized:
Crisis Battlesuite missil pod, plasma rifle, multi tracker
Firewarrior Squad (8 ), Devilfish APC, multi tracker, targeting array, decoy launchers
Firewarrior Squad (6), Devilfish APC, multi tracker, targeting array
Total: 400 exactly.

This gives you a versatile suite for tactical flexibility and 2 fast moving hard hitting skimmers with a decent amount of troops and upgrades. Most armies will find it nearly impossible to take down 2 skimmers in a patrol mission, you might even be better suited with this:

Firewarrior Squad (10), Devilfish APC, multi tracker, targeting array, decoy launchers
Firewarrior Squad (10), Devilfish APC, multi tracker, targeting array, decoy launchers
Total: Also 400 exactly

That force can put out some hurt in the tanks alone and really deny the enemy any VPs and you can rapid fire select targets in the game or even a last turn hammer smash as Tau will usually end up going second therefore getting the bottom of the 6th turn you can use the tanks to unload troops in rapid fire range and get a last turn of heavy handed shooting to make as many VPs as possible without the threat of retribution.

Alternatively you can do this:

Static:
Firewarrior Squad (10)
Firewarrior Squad (10)
Firewarrior Squad (10)
Firewarrior Squad (10)
Total: 400 exactly again.

This is a very simple list that puts out a lot of fire in a static firebase. In patrol missions there will be a small board and the enemy will usually want to come to you. This way you can eliminate the enemy from long range with concentrated fire and if assault units do reach you all you have to do is keep your units 7" or more apart and you should only lose one.

If your facing a little armor you can use this:
Crisis Suite, twin linked missil pod, flamer
Crisis Suite, twin linked missil pod, flamer
Crisis Suite, twin linked missil pod, flamer
Firewarrior Squad (12)
Firewarrior Squad (11)
Total: 401 points

This gives you some very nice long range hitting power and a solid firebase to dish out the damage.

These are just some basic examples of 400 point lists. I hope they help some.

I would highly recommend checking out the "TO Home-Made" Sample Army Lists for some ideas...just click on whether you're into Mech, Hybrid or Static, and there will be plenty of Combat Patrol lists.

Enjoy! ;D

Vash113: Nice lists!

These lists might be nice for a fun game Vash, but if you wish to place highly in a tournament they are inadequate.

Normal Combat Patrol (4 by 4 board, VPs only) is an incredibly easy game for Tau to win.

60 - 6 Firewarriors
130 - 2 Fireknife Crisis Suits
130 - 2 Fireknife Crisis Suits
65 - Fireknife Crisis Suit

You hide behind your piece of scenery, jump out, shoot, jump back. On 4 by 4 you should cover the entire board and even the assault marine combat patrol (3 bikes, 10 assault marines) will baulk at running into all that plasma.

If this is the doubles Tournament at Warhammer World then I assume you'll be playing on 6 by 4. A standard Tau combat patrol might not offer the necessary flexibility, although this depends on what your colleague is taking. For example, the above list would complement A rhino sisters list, but less so a static marine list. Furthermore, you must take units that score.

Therefore a good all-round list might well be something like

60 - 8 Firewarriors
120 - 4 Stealth Suits
130 - 2 Fireknife Crisis Suits
82 - Twin Missile / plasma HT-tracker team leader Crisis Suit

There is adequate terrain to hide those suits a WH World now. If you're colleague is going heavy weapon mad, take more stealth and drop a crisis.

Under no circumstances take anything in a Devilfish. They can't score and all missions require you to have scoring units.

I think he means 2x (I think for him and a friend) a Tau combat patrol list.
And seeing the title of the post it would be double games :P

Personally I would combine a highly mobile force with a static force:
Static being:

And then a Mech force:

Fireknife Crisis Suit (2)
Fireknife Crisis Suit (2)
Helios Crisis Suit (1)
Firewarrior Squad (7)
Total: 393

Combined this will give u the power of both the massive fire and the specialised Crisis.
This would be superior to any swarm army (u have massive fire) and rhino squads (or other transport squads) (u have your Fireknife's and Helios.

Here's a 400pt list I've had good success with:

12x Firewarriors in Devilfish (DL)
5x Stealth (or was it 4?)
1x Fireknife

Very mobile, lots of guns.

'I think he means 2x (I think for him and a friend) a Tau combat patrol list'

Yep, you'd be right... it relates to the standard combat patrol rules, listed on p.182 of the 4th Ed 40k rule book. The idea is that a good friend and myself, generate 1x list each @ 400pts. We then team up and fight other teams of 'doubles' We are playing with my Tau force and his Space Marine or Guard force... we've not decided yet.

'If this is the doubles Tournament at Warhammer World'

Yep, right again! ;D

Thanks to all for your suggestions, I particularly like those given by Torgoch and Pisces808... cheers.

Loki.

If you post the marine list then i can do a good Tau list to complement it.

Are you allowed to use multi-wound models in CP?
