Default Are Whirlwind Worth using?

I am starting to see Whirlwinds more and more at My Local GW store, and the new models are really cool, But I am yet to see them do any real damage, but maybe its just me : Fell free to post your thoughts ;D

Hmm, whirlwinds are one of those weapons where it is really good for specific roles.* Agaisnt horde armies I don't think there is a better tank as the pie-plate of doom can put the hurt on Orks and smaller Tyranids with it's Vengance missiles.* Swap them out of the Castillan missiles and you can set up effective defenses on any objectives.*

Special note, the minefields the Castillan missiles fire are IFF(Identify Freind, Foe) type and don't damage your own troops(check the entry* ;D ) so it's a good thing to lay down anywere you expect your troops and thier's [to meet] to help out in sticky combat situations.* Also mines always hit on the back armour so there are few tanks it can't damage.* It's really effective agaisnt those types of units that prefer to remain behind cover(or duck behind it) as it fires indirectly and can lay fields where they tend to hide.* >

There is a downside to indirect fire.* It's the only mode of fire you have so if you ever move you can't fire the launcher.* this means you need it in a* place with good cover and possibly a supporting unit to deal with anything that tries to attack it.* It needs the help too as it's only has standard rhino armour facings.* The indirect helps with this as you stay under cover but it usually means one hit and your out.

All and all a good unit, but one that takes careful consideration to use well.

A few things to add to spiritbws good comments (nice job ).

As he said, any army fielding lots of units, especially with mainly (or only) 4+,5+. and 6+ saves, it is a pie of doom (get it? pie plate? haha....). Also, as he said, mines can be good on defensive missions. In fact, you can do a kind of two time hitting with two whirlwinds. Have one with mine missiles and one with Vengeance Missiles. if you facing an open field, you can "create" your own choke points. Lay down mines A.S.A.P, but purposely leave a tiny gap big enough for infantry to fit. The player will prob. head right for the gaps, as they will look at the gaps as your flaw. Thats were you get to laugh at them. Cuase when they got a mob of orks, or a expensive group of stormtroopers, or 1-2 broods of 'Nids in a tiny area, the other Whirlwind can drop pie plates of doom. And thus wiping out anything, A bonus might be your opponent panics and sends those units right into the minefield >

But downsides ...everythings got one (except a fully assembled Marine army :P)

As Spiritbw said, you have to spend more points to protect them, and they have to be positioned proberly. While the whirlwinds are cheap, they need expensive protection. Also, against marine armies or chaos marine armies, it's like trying to kill a terminator with a lasgun. A 3+ save is hard to beat, and the Marines get hurt on a 3+. while most other amries will get hurt on 2+.

All-in-all, they are very crappy against strong armored units and high armored vehicles. Use them when you are sure to face a horde, or light armored opponents.

Well I was using it for smashing my friends Bug Horde, and it comopletely snaps them, But against other peeps that I played(like chaos marines and Deathwing :'( :'( :'( ) It dies, although it did kill 2 terminators in one turn with a pie plate(the best round of firing its ever done!).

Exactly what I said- weak enemies disapear like crazy under the whirlwind's fire, but marines just laugh. Nice shot on the termies though!

I wouldn't bother with the Mines. It's got a great Strenght for anti Infantry and a huge template for it too. The fact that it's AP cuts through most non-meq armies out there is nice. The problem is that if it can be targetted for a round or 2 it'll probably go down.

Now, say you don't want devastators.... 3 Whirlwinds would be pretty funny

Whirlwinds are a thinking man's weapon. I could explain why, but I'd be wasting my time; those who know already don't need to hear it, those who do need to hear it won't listen.

I'm currently revising my Crimson Fists and am now heavily leaning to more than 1 Whirlwind. I was planning for 1 but I'd like to see what 2 can do. We shall see.

The only problem I'm having right now, is thinking about 2 Vengeance WW's or 1 Vengeance and 1 Castellan.

Why are Mine versions called Castellan's ?

Typical. Why not get off the horse and offer some advice. Yours tends to be pretty good when you drop the attitude and actually offer it.
