Default Rate and Critique this First Time Players List!

My friend(s) are starting 40k right now and ones playin da orkses and ones playing Smurfs!

I have given him a simple list of loads of marines and can you help a little!


HQ
Captain

hmmmm this is a pretty decent shooty army... I don't think i see anything wrong with this list, other then the lack of a counter attack unit. I would take the trait "take the fight to them",allowing your tactical squads to swap bolters for bolt pistols and CCWs. Swap the weapons on the squad that your captain has joined and viola, a nice, hard hitting counter assault unit.

trust me it works. i did this against nids with an assault squad and it worked fairly good. it charged a unit of 16 hormagaunts (the scythy ones) that had charged a tactical squad and almost wiped it out. any way, the squad took out that unit, and was charged by another 16. after that, they went downhill. against 48 attacks almost every turn (36 or sumthin like that after the first turn) your bound to take some casualties. needless to say, my commander, equipped just like yours, took out 10 gaunts by himself after the rest of my army was defeated.... he just kept going and going and going.

i would advise you take some sort of counter attack unit. keep it among your lines until a charge is imminent, then move them closer to the unit being charged. after the unit gets charged (or before if you like) charge in with your counter attack unit. odds are you will win. but beware after that. the unit will lose some of its effectiveness due to casualties, but good use of cover will solve that.

how about taking a pred instead of 2 land speeders?

yep, a counter-assault unit is needed, maybe,hmmm yep take the fight to them sounds good, sergeant with a power fist in there too

a pred eh? good one! the only thing i don't like about it, is the fact the you are then reducing your enemies targets.

a power fist onthe sgt is a plus! as when your counter attacking, initiative isnt on the top of the list. as a side note, you might want to take "trust your battle brothers" instead of "take the fight to them". my reason for saying this is because for three points you gain true grit + counter attack. this means your models always count as having 2 CCWs and when the unit is charged, you can move your models into btb contact if they are not already in btb contact, BEFORE the combat begins. its like a mob up move. the only downside i might consider is the fact its 3 pts a model, whereas "take the fight to them" is free.

I'm making this list for an absolute newbie (my friend) so I think some armour likes of a pred is in order.

Take the fight to thems all fine and dandy but I want to keep it simple for him.

Dont keep it too simple for him. Remember this game costs money. You might want to figure out what kind of style he would like first then work around that.

then he will indeed need som heavy bolters!

3 missiles and 2 multis are more then enough anti armor on 1000pts

I would prolly give 1 speeder a HB instead and then reduce 1 of the marines units to 6 models with a heavy bolter

that should save you something like 80 pts which is just enough to give him another 6 man scout squad just aarmes with BP and CCW

yeah, I could do that, but He'll not want to convert and buying the model wont be for him, I'll indoctrinate him though.

I was consideriang giving the dread an assault cannon and dropping the land speeders for a pred or vindicator.
