Default Drop pod tactic

Would this work?

Ive looked but maybe im missing something but..... Seems to me that drop pods would make excellent objective marker defence.. For example if you landed your drop pod within a few inches of a objective and placed your troops on the objective. As long as the drop pod was still there it would still be contested...or is there somthing im overlooking in the rules.

No, that is perfectly fine if you JUST want to CONTEST. It is a good tactic to use against the enemy's objective so that other units will have to deal with the marines and drop pod. It isn't the best idea to use against yourself though because I do believe you must be inside a dedicated transport in order to claim an objective and be protected by an armour value. This is when flamers come in handy .

Last minute pods coming down have forced draws in some of my games because they contested objectives.

Unfortunately had that pod come down a few turns earlier I would have ignored the objective and the dreadnought inside would have splattered the troops on it.

If you really want to be a jerk with drop pods look into Lucious Pattern drop pods from imperial armor 2.

Yep, they're great for contesting objectives. The enemy has to deal with not only what it delivered but the pod itself in order to reclaim the objective. Being armor 12 it usually takes AV firepower to remove it.

This is a great tactic, also try to go second.

I also use my drop pods to create terrain and block opponents vehicles and routes of travel.

Another little thing about drop pods that are great is their ability to create cover for your squads and the fact that when Orks charge them, they tend to explode and take out not a few boyz. On the other hand, drop pods give up the initiative to enemies in reserve and are easy kill points.

They are dedicated transports so they don't give away a kill point.

Dedicated Transports, whilst not taking up an additional slot in the Force Organisation, are a separate unit and DO give away a Kill Point if destroyed.

Yep, if you've seen some of the other threads a very re-occuring comment is that KP are retarded.
