Default A Chapter of my own - Initial ideas (need some ideas from you all as well)

Well, for some while now I felt like making a SM chapter of sorts, but never got the incentive to start it until I realized;

1) I got a very lonesome but nicely converted and painted Vulkan-like model, based upon the DA body parts and the SM command parts.

2) Thanks to a commission I did a few months back, I got a Land Raider.

3) I got some Marine parts lying around thanks to my Death Guard conversions (most notably of Devastators and also DA vets).

Thanks to all these factors, I had this feeling that this would be the basis for my new 40k army to play around with, using the rules for a codex chapter with some Marine characters to make it work somehow.In addition, I want to use every SM-based bits I got to the max to allow for a truly funky and fun force.

Right now the basic ideas for my army in game-terms are;

1) DA veteran bodies to become sternguards.

2) Having some assault termies to go along with the land raider

3) Using both Lysander and Pedro count-as models as a way to utilize 1) and 2) to the fullest. In addition, I would also like to use Vulkan's rule as well somehow.

4) A straightforward infantry-based force, since I really want something different compared to all my other forces, all whom played with the mechanized and/or deepstriking rule.

For Fluff-wise terms I would like to incorporate a mix of knightly ideas and also some Scottish Highlander themes into the army.

So yeah, those are my concepts for this army. Any other ideas?

Back a while ago, I did something similar. I designed a new unit (it was the Space Marine's version of a Broadside). Although, by the looks of things, my ideas aren't going to be of much help as mine was a heavy-firepower based army.

Lysander doesn't really add much to a assault termies. Grabbing assault termies in a land raider, Pedro and sternguard eats up a big chunk of your army already. With that all gone I'd suggest focusing on a few tac squads to up your numbers and maybe a bit of speed to help contest objectives as needed.

Somewhat agreed, but nonetheless, I find that this is somewhat tedious to make Rhino chassis when you already build like tons of them. So I may have to find another outlet for my army, and perhaps more variations of troops I can field.

As someone who has built one army from the ground up (my own Fists of Flame) and about to start another one (maybe two even), get a blank sheet of paper and a pen/pencil.

Sit down for about 20 minutes and draw/write/sketch whatever comes to mind. Any crazy ideas will do and just get them down onto the paper. This can be anything from unique symbols and units to new ideas for vehicles or unique slants to common characters.

Do this over a few "sessions" and generally add to it whenever you feel you have something to add, you'll build up a collection of ideas you can use (or not as the case may be) which will lead you onto building some fluff and fleshing out your Chapter more fully.

Some of the ideas will just "work" for you and other's won't and the good thing I found is that I'm constantly expanding on who the Fists of Flame are from little details I find myself adding to the models out of "coolness" that evolve into unique slants to them.

As an example, when I first started building my Marines, I bought Space Wolve Blood Claws and they came with these "tails of hair" that I started sticking randomly across my squads. These eventually became the sign of a "Tarsissian Veteran" which marks them out as surviving the Second War of Tarsiss III. They don't mean much outside of the fluff, but the fact that it's there is a good bit of fluff for me.

I would like to ask a question; Can a chapter have a force organization slot like those of the chapter that tutored them, without becoming a splinter of the chapter?

The question is because would like to use the fluff that the Dark Angels are essentially responsible to tutoring my Chapter in fighting during their early founding days, and thus adopted some parts of the Dark Angels force organization slot, but not fully understanding why their tutor chapter organized it as such. An example would be basically a Terminator-only first company and Bikers and Landspeeder-only second company like those of the Deathwing and Ravenwing (respectively) but not understanding the deeper meanings behind the Dark Angel's motive of organizing it, mainly those of finding the fallen .

Just a thought here...
I took some of randys advice and thought of some ideas for your army.
I noticed that you said you wanted a bit of a scottish highland feel so maybe you could checker the paint scheme like the Howling Griffons. That, or maybe checker an award. Even just indicating veteran status by a checkered helmet would add some variation to the overall look of your army.
I know the Dark Angels enjoy adding another layer of protection to thier 15 inch layer of highly advanced ceramite, full body armour in the way of a cloth that varies between 1/4 and 1/2 centimetres of protection thats been around since the stone age. Maybe you could get dark angel miniatures and paint the cloth scottish like. Have you given any thought to your emblem?? A lion's profile is quite scottish. A final idea i've been saving for last...
You know those "rocket launchers" those youngings have been talking about putting on our holy dreadnauts? Well i think that you should counter this obvius commie plot to ruin us by adding a sizable marine hurling a log at enemies from the protection of an 11 tonne, 5 meter tall killing machine.

well if one marine chapter doesn't usually train another chapter i would say this would be a good idea;

a hero of great skill(pedro, and or lysander) has been sent from the dark angels chapter to help this new founding chapter get off the ground. he spends time with them and could also fight with them. if you wanted to use both characters you could say that pedro is the young force commander and his doctrines are obvious with the men he has trained. lysander could be the dark angels hero from the deathwing company. some random high ranking officer. he could have a personnel retinue of deathwing terminators (which would be just regular vanilla assault terminators painted like dark angels) or the terminators he has been working with in the new chapter. that way you can have a unique force because this dark angels hero could be a specialist in anything(the special affects you get from the special character), and that would rub off on your men, and you get to keep the connection to the dark angels.

I already am painting those that are higher up with tartan patterns, using the DA robed veterans for some of my more elite models. As for the insignia, I have decided to used a slightly stylized form of an angel with wings for my Space Marines, so I kinda fulfilled both ideas at the same time; that of a rather scottish but also knightly idea.

Not really my kind of thing, as I do not want an exceptionally messed up chapter. :P

But I may opt to use the SM, DA, and Black Templars codex to represent some of my forces at time.

well i left it open so that you could take it however you want. i don't like combing colors either. but i think that my situation would be interesting.
