Default Dreadnought: To venerate or not to venerate?

Ok I love dreadnoughts (11 and counting). Simply awesome especially with the new drop pod rules. However I haven't had a chance to evaluate venerable dreads in battle up to this point so yet again I will call upon the help of you guys. Are they worth the 60 point upgrade? Note to do field this model in my current list I will have to drop a flamer (no big deal) and a multi-melta attack bike (definitely a bigger deal). One more note, this guy's got extra armor & an assault cannon but that's it on upgrades.

I've never used venerable dreads either.
but by the sounds of it your paying an attack bike and flamer for a boosted BS and WS plus the re rolls.
It really depends on what you want the dread to be doing and if the upgrade will make it better at that job.
In my opionion you would be better of with the attack bike (im playing favourites here but hey..)
but your best option would be to play test it and see what you think.

I like making the dread venerated becuz I field him with a plasma cannon.
I love anti-meq blasts. I am also thinking of using a flamer and giving him the ultimate of accessories...a droppod

Venerable upgrade is very expensive, and not as good as a holo-field. I would pass on it, unless you are Space Wolves. Space Wolves do venerable dreadnoughts right.

Um, Wolves get a single rule more & different weapons costs but are otherwise the same, HQ slot not withstanding. Plus they only get 1 on the field.

Mr T Marine, drop pods are for dreads traveling in style. Anyways looks like I'll be field testing the ven as I'm short a bike or two (depending on circumstances) so why not. On a related note, what base does an attack bike use anyways? Got a new one, get home & bam no base.

Yeah...I just want venerable death company dreadnoughts or venerable furiosos...gotta love GW making rules to allow a special army dreadnought to take venerable but not making the only model out there with 1 arm that allows you to have it look proper.

Forgeworld also fails Furiosos as they are outfitted with a meltagun and stormbolter and their venerable dreadnought left/right close combat arms are both storm bolters...or flamers.

Ironsides also make me sad...yay they gave vanilla marines "super" furiosos...kinda makes the furioso less cool.

Venerable is cool in the vanilla marines dex as it actually has some effects but it's really your call...most people I know field them cause their cool looking.

Furioso dreads weren't the only ones who got shafted. Mortis dreads were kinda bypassed with the extra autocannon arm option. Heck a Morti-lite is cheaper than a autocannon Mortis dread & that's the only pattern I'm interested in. You could throw a flyer my way & I'm completely cool with it. Honestly Mortis dreads were the only reason I would play a DA army but no longer.

Yeah I stick to Blood Angels for Death Company and Baal predators...but thanks to all the gimping into feel no pain it's barely worth it for their points...especially when you compare them to plague marines. DC cost more, have less toughness but have a chance to rend...brutal against a P.Marine but P.marines can field a power weapon which basically means the D.Co=mauled because its almost guranteed that even with 10 D.Co you won't get enough wounds/rends to remove a 5 man P.Marine squad before...course thanks to wound distribution ya might get lucky and have the only P.Marine who decides to fail both his saves be the power weapon...which for some odd reason is how it almost always ends up.

I think D.Co have higher base attacks then P.Marines but P.Marines always have a bolter/bolt pistol/close combat weapon...I thought that was really odd that chaos in general has every model outfitted this way.
