I'm fairly new to 40K having been in about a year. I have a 2k army of Tau and it's a great shooty army. But I've decided I wanted an assault army and I decided with Ultramarines. I'm lookin to create 1.5-2k army but not sure what direction to go but I am looking for a fast attack style army with some heavy weapons for support. This is what I have so far:
1 Captain 20 Space Marines for Tactical Squads 1 Dreadnought 5 Termies 1 Rhino Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Thanks everyone. |

You've got a nice selection of models there, that are flexible and well balanced. However, I don't think Ultramarines are the best choice for an assaulting army. Raven Guard certainly would be, and are arguably the most powerful Chapter to field with Kayvaan Shrike. The Dreadnought may counter the fluff of this Chapter slightly but I wouldn't worry too much as it's not a major infringement. I would add a Jump Pack, Lightning Claws and other necessary equipment to your Captain to make him a 'counts-as' Shrike, unless you're not short on funds, and purchase some Assault Squads, as well as a Vanguard Veteran Squad. Support by Tactical Squads, their Transports and Scouts you'll have a nice, strong army
.

Never heard of em but I did a quick google since I don't have my books here and definitely seems to be what im looking for.
So maybe 2-3 Assault Squads boxes, 1 VVS and Scouts. But what about heavy support? Say maybe a vindicator and a whirlwind or is this more of a in your face assault style army? |

If you're going to take a Heavy Support choice then I think a Land Raider or Devastators would be most suitable. This is because slow units aren't ideal for the Raven Guard but when used as Transport they become much more useful.

Shrike needs a birdy beak, don't forget that haha.
Your termies should probably opt for thunder hammer/storm shield setups. Doesn't Shrike give the whole army fleet?

Can i just fight the corner of the whirlwind and vindy? Whirlwinds are great for their indirect fire.. Sit them behind some cover and blast away.. Sure their strength isn't great but they can really disorganize troops positions, them can soften up units ready for an assault. I would recommend going with 2 whirlies and 1 vindy.. The vindy gives a nice punch to take out the big scary units that can support your tactical squads as they move up the field while the whirlies clear a path.. (as it were) or my favorite.. Cover clearing.. With their new inferno shots, they can make sure units in cover don't get their saves.. and with the massive increase in cover saves, these are almost invaluable.
As for assault squads.. go for squads of 10 men, maybe stick a melta gun in their for tank hunting and give the sarg of each squad a power fist. this means that each squad can take on any enemy.. Go for two or three of these squads and a tactical squad along with skrike and you have a deadly force or more or less 1500 points. To go bigger i would suggest more troops (scout maybe in an LS storm) or a chaplain as a secondary leader. Hope i helped.

I'm not to sure how fluffy this is as I'm not familiar with raven guard however i would suggest thunder hammer storm shields 3+ invul is absolutely amazing. Also tactical squads rock but i would take some more rhino's so they can move around the board quicker.
