Default The "50 Space Marine " army structure

I was reflecting on an article a few weeks back about structuring SM armies according to their own TO&E, and it seemed the outcome was a larger than usual infantry force.

Been doing my own toying with that and blending it with what I know of a typical modern army structure, to wit:

- 3 to 4 tactical squads, typically carrying an anti infantry and an anti tank weapon
- 1 heavy weapon squad (often with 2 or 3 different things - HMG, AT, Mortars)
- an HQ squad which normally has some form of ability the rest don't have (In 40K thats typically stopping large unpleasant things)

Often there is a recce/scout unit attached, I'm thinking either Bikers or Jetpacks here.

An armoured formation often has its own transport cum fighting vehicles (ie various flavours of Rhino), pure infantry rely on softer transport and armour / air support backup (both may use these in fact)

So, was playing with this for my army, structure could be (for a bog standard footslogging force):

- HQ - Leader with ability to take down large, nasty things with a bit of help (maybe a few Vets)
- 3 Tac Squads of 10, Missiles/Plas
- 1 Support Squad, broken into 2 Devastator units of 5 - 2x LasCannons, 2 x Autocannons, and 1 Dreadnought
- Recce Squad, 10 Scouts, Snipers, Missile

So c 1300 pts of ""standard units", c 200 pts to play with.

Problem I see is this, your devos can't take auto cannons, I would recommend two heavy bolters instead since Plasma Cannons are more anti-horde because of the new deviation rules.

200 points to spend, probably need transports, since you have to get to those objectives.

I think your approach to creating a SM force is really cool. I wish i could give more feedback but i think a unit of Assault Marines would fit great. IMO bikers leans more towards maneuvrability to shoot things while jump pack marines makes a cool unit that fits the army as a shock troop

Thats one opton, ie a "motorised" force - to be honest tho, with the new second move option, Im less fussed about everyone moving. I'd probably double up on the Dread and add a few nore fast attack troops

second move? do you mean running? Running is nice but its really not as fast as people think, on average an extra 10.5 inches after 3 turns of running, which means no shooting for 3 turns to get as far as a rhino or razorback could in 1 turn. with the prices of rhinos and razorbacks being so cheap you can still take a could and another dread.

I actually run a list very similar to this (though I use the DA codex):

HQ
Company Master with bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades, Iron Halo, power weapon, jump pack, and melta bombs
140 pts

Chaplain with frag and krak grenades, bolt pistol, Rosarius, Crozius Arcanum, melta bombs
105 pts
ELITES
Dreadnought with Assault Cannon, DCCW with built-in heavy flamer, extra armour
145 pts
TROOPS
10 Space Marines including flamer and Veteran Sergeant with melta bombs, bolt pistol, power fist
200 pts

10 Space Marines including flamer and Veteran Sergeant with melta bombs, bolt pistol, power fist
200 pts

10 Space Marines including melta gun and Veteran Sergeant with melta bombs, bolt pistol, power fist
205 pts

10 Space Marines including melta gun and Veteran Sergeant with melta bombs, bolt pistol, power fist
205 pts

5 Space Marines including melta gun and Veteran Sergeant with melta bombs, bolt pistol, power fist
125 pts
FAST ATTACK
Assault Squad:
10 Space Marines including two plasma pistols and Veteran Sergeant with bolt pistol, power fist, and melta bombs
295 pts
HEAVY SUPPORT
Vindicator with extra armour and dozer blade
145 pts
Whirlwind
85 pts
Devastator Squad:
5 Space Marines with four heavy bolters
150 pts

2000 pts

I've found it works very well. I haven't tried it against any seriously tank-heavy armies yet. It definitely does better against weaker troops, rather than armies like Necrons/Chaos, but it still does alright. I always have plenty of troops to grab objectives (though I do usually roll 5s and 6s for my runs) and everything does okay killing stuff. It's also really fun to play, both with and against (from what I can tell from my opponents).

don't think so... you must be 10 models, in order to take special or heavy weapons

That's actually one of the things I have against the new codex. I'm not sure if it was a typo in the book, or if they actually meant it that way.

Sorry... You used the DA codex, and at the time, it was legal... But no more, and it's not a "typo in the book"... They meant it !!! Even with 8 Marines and 1 sarge... they will be all equipped with only a Bolter...
