Default Does anybody, play space wolves any more?

Today I was at a auction and picked up close to 2000 points of space wolves today, for $110. I was searching on Gw's main web site however I could not find the space wolf codex. Does this chapter still get played? Also I just started playing war hammer 40k, and started off with tau, does anybody know some good elites I should pick up for my space wolves? I was thinking maybe a veteran dreadnaught or maybe some more terminators. Any help would be greatly appericated

Yes you can still play Space Wolves however you will have to buy the Codex on Amazon or Ebay as it is OOP pending a new codex that is in the works for early 09 apparently or even late 08. You can get a free PDF copy of low quality by calling the Canadian Direct Services and giving them your email. There is also a downloadable PDF on the German GW site but thats of course in German.

As for Veterans thats tricky. Space Wolves are organized in a completely different manner to any other Chapter of Adeptus Astartes. Space Wolf Elites are a tricky subject. Scouts are Elites in the Space Wolves as they are actually attatched only to the Great Company of the Great Wolf himself, and dispersed among other warbands as the Great Wolf sees fit. All Veterans in a Great Company however are known as Wolf Guard and of these you may have no more than 20 in a Space Wolf army. These may be used in 3 ways. First they may be attatched to squads as Wolf Guard Pack Leaders, these act similarly to Veteran Sergeants in other armies by boosting the squads leadership and providing a mix of available weaponry. Wolf Guard may also be assigned as Bodyguards and these Bodyguards may or may not purchase Terminator Armor. Lastly a single Wolf Guard may be given Mark of the Wulfen and operates as an Indipendant Character who can't join a squad and has some nasty boosts in CC. However no matter how many Wolf Guard you take or how you use them they cannot be more than 20 in number and all take up a single Elites choice.

Note though as I said above Space Wolf Terminators are Bodyguards, never squads on their own. So if you want more Terminators you have to make sure that you have a Character to attatch them too and also that you don't have more than 20 Wolf Guard.

Lastly a note you should keep in mind, Space Wolves do not use HQ's in the way other armies do. In that you MUST use one HQ for every 750 points of Space Wolves you field, no more, no less. So this means at 2000 points you should have no less than 3 HQ's on the field, however only Wolf Guard Battle Leaders can be taken more than once so you can't have 2 Rune Priests or 2 Wolf Priests, or 2 Wolf Lords or 2 Venerable Dreadnaughts for that matter.

Anyway I do have a sizeable Space Wolves army so if you have any questions just ask and I'll see what I can do. Also you should have a look at the Space Wolves: A Comprehensive History article to learn more about the background of the Sons of Fenris.

Thank you very much Vash I appericate all the help with this. As far as the Hq's go I believe i have 2 hq's right now one is wolf lord Grimnar and I believe I got wolf lord Ragnar.

Hey vash what do you usually take for anti armor/ tank. I was thinking a land raider or maybe even some land speeders.

Try using the modify/edit button instead of double-posting, Drax.

I'm not a huge SW buff, but I can tell you that a Landraider is a poor choice for anti-tank. Some 'standard' options for that are Long Fangs, a (venerable) Dread kitted to kill tanks (perhaps with a TL-lascannon), or a Predator Annihilator.

Also, since you're new, I'd recommend starting off with smaller battles, perhaps 750 or 1500 (so that the HQ requirement isn't a huge detriment). Get used to your army, see what it needs and then add stuff from your reserves accordingly.

Furthermore, keep in mind that in 5th edition, Troops are extremely important, so they should make a large portion of your army.

Logan Grimnar is a sick character and model and Ragnar's got some good stats, but his model IMO could really use an update. Personally I'd suggest modeling up a Wolf Lord, Rune Priest and Wolf Priest as your basic 3 HQ's or even take a cheap Battle Leader or two if you don't want to go HQ heavy.

Well my army has at least a dozen Power Fists, plus 2 Meltas, 2 Plasma Guns, 2 lascannons, couple assault cannons and a missile launcher or two and those work pretty well. But a Land Speeder Tornado does a good job at anti-tank. So do Wolf Scouts with a couple of Plasma Pistols and a Meltagun, OBEL behind the enemy and pop off some rear armor shots.

The trick with Long Fangs is that they don't have really any ablative wounds so every cassualty a valuable pack member is lost and they aren't cheap but they do make pretty good fire magnets. A Venerable Dread is also a great choice, helps make sure you go first and isn't bad at downing tanks with whatever weaponry you give it.

When I start i go like 750 battles minimum. Just purely for the fact its hard to battle with marines in 500 size and 750 go for longer and are generally funner.

I'd strongly suggest you get no more than 1 Dreadnaught. Space Wolves can only take 1 Venerable Dreadnaught, or they can take 1 Dreadnaught from the vanilla marine codex in addition to the Venerable but this is a strange option and will probably be gone in the new codex. So to be on the safe side your best off not buying anymore than 1 Dreadnaught.

And yes Space Wolves are a lot of fun. They're the only Chapter of Space Marines that does things the old fashioned way, they charge into combat blades drawn, kick but, take names, and then go back to their camp to sit around a roaring fire while drinking booze and boasting.
