Howdy y'all. I've come to the conclusion that SM veterans are a tragic waste of points in every game that I'v played with them, so I've opted to go for a Termie captain with a squad of assault termies. I play salamanders so I'm torn between the Thunder hammers or lightning claws. Claws seem loads more useful (esp. w/ furious charge!) but seem a bit o.t.t and not very salamander-ish. I don't have any expereince with assault termies so what do you recommend?

Space marine veterans work great as small squads with lascannon, plasma gun and tank hunters! Great for killing armour!
Assault terminators, while very cool looking, are very hard to use right. They don't have the speed to get into combat really, and they can't do any damage until they reach combat. They're not overly hard to kill, and they struggle to make their points back. However the models do look great!

I would use 3 with lightning claws and 2 with thunder hammer and storm shield. Have a mix of both but more lightning claws. You should have a captan or a command squad carry a teleport homer so that you can teleport them to the battle and get into combat before they can get shot at.

From experience i find that Termies with Thunder hammers are more threatening, my friend Rebecca loves them because in the unlikely situation it doesnt instant-kill you, you cant attack back!! but lightning claws do have their merits simply because you hit at I 4. Personally, I dont know much about termie composition but i do know 1 Chaplain with Lightning claws+5 termies with Lightning Claws=Completely annihilated Ork army.

I find a mix is generally best. The exact composition of the mix depends on what you'll be gunning for, but I typically run three w claws, two w T hammers.
I take saves on hammers first if Im in combat with light infantry that strikes at I5+, and prevent normal saves. IE, harlequins, genestealers, the nasty stuff. If my claws actually get to strike, I'll gladly kill them off to maximize my strikes on the charge.
