As you well know, Chaplains and Librarians have access to the armoury. The armoury rules stipulate that such models may select up to two weapons, of which only one may be two-handed. That being so, is there anything from stopping me selecting a Storm Bolter and a Thunder Hammer while still retaining the model's default weapon?
Now I don't want to hear 'it replaces the default weapon', or 'you are limited to a total of two' without reference to the text that specifically says so. Has anyone got an official ruling on this or are we limited to our opinions on the matter?

Both the storm bolter and thunderhammer are two-handed weapons, right? I don't think you could equip them this way.
If you were to have bolt pistol and thunderhammer I think you would keep the default weapon as it doesn't specifically state that default equipment is replaced. |

Technically I would agree with Cadaver, but if you did this I would consider it following the letter rather than the spirit of the rules, and thus brand you as a rules lawyer...
After all, if you give a veteran sergeant a Power Weapon and Plasma pistol, you don't still expect to be able to use his old bolter do you?

So technically I could equip a Chaplain with a Energy Weapon and a Plasma Pistol, retaining the Crozius Arcanum with him?
Sweet. 8) Cheers. |

Did the words, "Rules Lawyering", not register with you?
While you could do this it is going against the way the rules were intended and is very RAW, as you might say.

Why would you do that Adam, if the Crozius is already a power weapon

But back to the point, I read the codex and it says any 2 weapons..., but any model can only have 2 weapons due to a shortage of hands (and the fact that 3 weapons is way to cumbersome in a battle, try drawing a thunder hammer and putting away your power club, and on top of that firing a storm bolter into some fire warriors while a tank is firing an auto cannon at you. Chuck Norris, Jet Li, or even the immortal Emperor could pull that off even in power armour). |

This is sort of old news. However, yes, you may end up with 3 weapons total. And the argument that you don't have enough hands is quite frankly stupid. DA Company Masters can have a bolt pistol, a pair of lightning claws, and a storm bolter. Figure out how that works, but it does. There are no rules which limit you to only two weapons held. In fact, the rule book implies that this is possible.

Aun LeKath - You always play by RAW, except in a friendly setting where you discuss it with your opponent. The only other reason why you would not play with RAW is if there was a vagary in the rules - this is not one of them. The rules are clear, and it is blatantly poor sportsmanship to deny him using the rule or punishing him for doing so. It is just like arguing against taking just one weapon, or a unit from the appropriate codex. So, Tom, yes, you may select both a Storm Bolter and a Thunder Hammer. Very expensive, but still. This is also why you can take a pair of lightning claws, which nobody seemed to have a problem with... |

Sure enough, I hadn't checked my codex but was thinking a thunderhammer was two-handed. Abael is right.
The only thing I would add is that if the newer SM codices that have been released are any indication, weapons like the thunderhammer may no longer be an option for Chaplains and Librarians when the new SM codex is released. You may end up having to change out such weapon configurations in the future. |
