Reading the Horus Heresy (currently finishing Galaxy in Flames) I've noticed that each squad has a name, I.E. Locasta Squad etc.
Anyone know if there is any tradition behind the names, such as being named after a hero or a sergeant? An event maybe? Or are the names just chosen to be cool? Any idea what Dark Angels squads would be named? Any references in fiction that anyone can point me to? I'm basically building my army around tactical squads who have specific tasks and specialties, such as anti-armor, fire support and suppression. As each squad distinguishes itself in a game I'll name the squad and the sergeant and give the models 'upgrades' like a robed body for sarge and more dark angely bits like backpacks and icons. It's going to make squeezing every last point into an army a tad difficult, but whatever, I play this game for the fluff. I'll go play Warmachine if I want to min-max everything down to a math exercise.

well, i find the most basic name are squad alpha, beta, theta, but i tend to name my squads after the name of my veteran sergant. maybe squad vorn or somthing like that. ;D i think it personalises your army a bit more. if you need help with names just think up ancheit greek/itallian names, they mostlly sound cool. like
lysander, icarus, domitrius and then there are the common names from the stories like lucius (al ways a favourite) just recently i have treid experamenting with germanic names so i have a chaptr master called Mikial von curstof ;D

The general method seems to be the name of the squad leader is the name of the squad. As for finding names, looking to Greek names is good, but if you can find an English to Latin dictionary, you can make any number of marine-y sounding names.

I find looking to the Dark Angels Name Generator on the US Games Workshop site is very helpful.

Thanks, yeah, I saw the name generator before, in fact I'll be using a name or two from it. I just wanted to know what, if any naming conventions were used for squads.
Oh, how about vehicles? I've seen a few Rhinos with names on the front. Is that the name of the vehicle, or the squad?

for a transport it may be the squad name but for other vehicles it will have its own name.
I would personally asign non-transport vehicles a greek letter (Alpha Beta Gamma Delta Epsilon Zeta Eta Theta Iota Kappa Lamda Omicron Upsilon Pi Phi Omega) while for squad (and transport vehicles) I would use the name of the sergeant.

Also, a new Horus Heresy book is coming out soon, called Descent of Angels, which is about Dark Angels (unsuprisingly) so maybe that could give you some ideas.
