Default Can apothecaries work in close combat?

OK, I am looking at the rules, and by the wording it is strange. It seems that apothecaries don't work if they themselves are in CC, but what if they are not, but are within range to affect a squad/model that is?
This has become a HUGE discution at my local gaming store as I build my newest SM army, as I will be fielding 6 apothecaries, so any answers/help is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Yes as long as they are not in close combat themselves then they can use it for wounds from close combat. It also works on Rending wounds from Assualt Cannons, but not Rending from close combat.

BTW How do you get 6. I run a max of 3 in my blood angels army, and it gives people major fits. If I could run 6 I would in a heart beat.

If he's using traits he can get for for each tac squad I think.

Purity above all allows me to turn my Veteran Sargents in my Veteran and Tactical squads into an Apothecary.

Sorry that's incorrect.

An apothecaire cannot use his abilities if he is locked. A unit is locked once one or more members from the unit are in close combat.

So even if the apothecaire is 12" away from an enemy model, but one guy in his unit is in combat, he can't use his abilities.

However if you have an apothecaire whose squad is not locked within 6" of a friendly model who is in combat you may use his ability on that model.

I think that is what JBunny was saying. If you have an apothecary near a close combat, but not one in which he is involved, he can save a wound that the other unit takes, as you noted as well. Sort of odd, really.

Ah ok. I'd interpreted JBuny as saying as long as the apothecaire model wasn't in base contact, not that his unit wasn't in combat.

Anyways as long as its all clear now.

Remember people, apothacaries can only save wounds from failed saves, so it won't work on rending, at all. Or weapons with ap3 or less.

Thats reading to much into RAW. AP2 just assumes that the Armour Save was failed. Remember GW can not write coherent instructions. Thats why we have so many rules debates.
