Default Index Astartes: The 1,000 Chapters

Chapters so far: 99

This topic is an attempt to redo the 1,000 Chapters list, but in a slightly more entertaining and informative way, inspired by the continued efforts of Dazzo of 40Konline, who was the first to attempt a 1,000 Chapter list. His turned out a little different to this one, and this redux probably will as well!

Have you ever looked down that list and wondered who those Chapters are? Well, here at last we have the answer!

The list is being redone from scratch. Each Chapter submitted must now comply to a new, more demanding format:

Name: Their name.
Chapter Colours: An image of the Marine (the B&C have an awesome Space Marine Painter that can be used for this.
Background: A simple factoid of the Chapter. It can be as grand or as simple as you like, so long as it is brief.

With luck, we'll have ourselves one hell of a list when it's done. :P

[hr]

Note to fellow editors: Please do not arrange Chapters by "The", or similar words; simply leave the word out.

Default Re: Index Astartes: The 1,000 Chapters

Acolytes of Zeal

Highly pious Chapter, recruiting from the Cardinal World of Pyrreax. The Chapter is almost entirely committed against Chaos incursions from the Eye of Terror.

Angels Encarmine

A Blood Angel's sucessor chapter, the Angels Encarmine participated in the campaign to rid the Crimson Fists' homeworld of Orks. Their chapter symbol is a bat-winged drop of blood

Angels of Absolution

A second founding Dark Angels successor. The entire chapter fought against Abbadon's 13th Black Crusade. Their symbol is a skull superimposed over a stylized wing

Angels of Redemption

A second founding Dark Angels successor. Participated in the Third War for Armageddon. Their symbol is a winged skull

Angels of Vengeance

A Dark Angels Successor Chapter. One of the "Unforgiven". The Chapter's symbol is a white winged skull with a stylised hood. An inverted red V rests over the skull

Angels Porphyr

A chapter founded in the 31st Millenium. Their chapter symbol is the profile of a winged skull. Participated in the 3rd war for Armageddon

Angels Sanguine

A Blood Angels successor chapter. Fought against Abbadon's 13th Black Crusade. One of their librarians, Ashok, wears the Shroud of Lemartes which is said to stave off the Red Thirst.

Angels Vermillion

A Blood Angels successor, their symbol is a winged blood drop with a small skull at the base of the drop

Angles of Fire

Founded in the 36th Millenium, the Angels of Fire particpated in the 3rd war for Armageddon

Archangels

The Archangels are looking for the scattered remains of their chapter, as such not much about them is known. All that is known is that they are a fleet chapter, searching the stars for their brethren.

Aurora Chapter

Descended from the Ultramarine's geneseed. Date of founding is debated, some believing them to be second founding, others much later. Their symbol is a lower case letter alpha inside a twelve-pointed star

Avenging Sons

A chapter of the 19th founding from the world of Traekonnis Major. A strike force of their chapter fought on Taros. The entire second company was almost completely wiped out during the liberation of Antillis IV. The sole survivor, a scout, managed to escape aboard a thunderhawk with the majority of the company's geneseed

Azure Dragons

The Azure Dragons homeworld was engulfed in a massive warpstorm centuries ago, and the Chapter now bases itself out of its Battlebarges and Strike Cruisers. They are not often seen on the field of battle, but when they do appear they strike quickly, slaughtering any who stand before them before they fade away to ply the stars once more.
Traits: Blessed be the Warriors, Take the Fight to Them, Eye to Eye

Azure Hand

The Azure Hand suffered grevious losses in a number of campeigns, to the point where some question if they still exist. Rumour has it they were merged with another decimated chapter to form a new one.

Barren Sentries

Their home planet destroyed by the enroaching Tyranid invaders, the Barren Sentries battle xenos across the far Eastern rim of the galaxy. They are feared for their lightning attacks: ambushes set up for the enemy days prior.
Traits: See but don't be seen; No mercy, no respite : Death before dishonour; Flesh over steel

Black Consuls

A second founding chapter of Ultramarine geneseed. Their symbol is a white eagle head

Black Dragons

A Chapter cursed with a strange mutation in its Gene Seed, the Black Dragons grow massive, blade-like protrusions of bone because of this flaw. Though every genetic sample submitted to the Adeptus Mechanicus proves to be utterly pure, it is suspected they are obtaining this Gene Seed tithe from other sources...

Black Hunters

Successor chapter of the Black Templars and just like them, They do not have a home world but fleets, Often smaller than there predecessors. They tend to favour the Close Combat style of warfare. Often feasting after a slaughterous victory.

Black Templars

Crusading Chapter. See Ref_File 4597/9

Black Wings

There is little information on this chapter. They appear to be a codex chapter bearing the symbol of a black bat or dragon wing

Blazing Kitsunes

See Ref_file 19947/R.
Luy22's
Blood Angels

See Index Astartes Archives

Blood Drinkers

A 2nd founding chapter. Unusual among Blood Angel successors in that they are strict followers of the Codex Astartes. Participated in the effort to reclaim the Crimson Fists' homeworld from the Orks. Symbol is a drop of blood above a chalice

Blue Desolators

Blue Vipers

The Blue Vipers are a small chapter partially under the control of a covert section of the Adeptus Mechanicus. They are a second founding chapter of the Iron Hands, but have trained in similar stealth skills to the Raven Guard. They hunt Tyranids in and around the Tau Empire, hiding from all other races, including the Tau themselves.

Brazen Claws

Second founding Iron Hands successor. Fought against Abbadons 13th Black Crusade. Chapter symbol is a depiction of red claws or talons

Brotherhood of a Thousand

A late founding codex chapter of unknown origin. Their symbol is a black letter M (representing 1000) inside an undersized white circle

Children of Olympus

They recruit from the Olympus system. The chapter HQ is located on the city-covered world of Olympus X in the center of the system. They have a very long and deep history. The only known facts are that they succeed from the Ultramarines geneseed, and that they recruit from the city-wide planet of Olympus X as well as the other many varieties of planets within the Olympus system.
Luy22's
Conquerors

An unorthadox Chapter, the Conquerors are disposed, some may say obsessed with the use of defensive positions. They make heavy use of drop-landed prefabricated bunkers.Battlecry: "We claim this soil for the Emperor!"

Creamators

The Creamators chapter are a newly created chapter. Their homeworld is a jungle world and the plannets in the surrounding system however are pradominantly dessert. Salamander successor.
Traits See but don't be seen, Be swift as the wind, Aspire to glory

Crimson Angels:

Crimson Fists

A successor to the Imperial Fists. Their Fortress Monestary was destroyed in a fluke accident during an Ork invasion (see Rynn's World Incident)

Dark Angels

See Ref_File 2417/A4R

Dark Eagles

A little known codex chapter bearing the symbol of a single eagle wing

Dark Hands

Rumoured to be an Imperial Fists successor, but that is merely speculation. Fought the Hrud on Chinchare. Symbol is an outstretched hand facing the viewer as if making a "halt" gesture

Dark Templars

The Dark Templars strictly adhere to the Codex Astartes although their 10th company is slightly larger than that of a normal company due to their desire to bring the chapter to full strength. Little is known about the origins of the Dark Templars, save that the entire Chapter's homeworld was obscured by a warp storm for several centuries. Little further information is available.

Darkwolves

A relativley young and an otherwise Codex chapter bar the use of Wolf iconography, they recruit from a feral world in the Lupius system, Lupius 2. Due to having fought mostly Eldar pirates and Ork speed freaks in their early history, leading to an emphasis on mobile warfare, the chapter does not generally use Land Raiders in combat (Reasoning that Eldar technology mades the powerful armour of the land raiders virtually redundant and an unnessicary risk) and the three they still have are almost revered artifacts, used solely by the first company and Chapter Master.

Death Knights

A codex chapter bearing the symbol of a skull with a maltese cross on it's forehead

Death Strike

Deathwatch

Doom Eagles

Doom Warriors

Eagle Warriors

Einherjar

Not much is know of the Einherjar. Hailing from the Northern Reaches of the Galaxy near the Halo Zone, the Einherjar prefer to overwhelm their enemies in wave after wave of brutal assaults. Behind the curtains, so to speak, are the mysterious Masters, who watch over the Chapter.

Emperor's Hawks

Emperor's Summoners

The emperor's closest companions were the most elite group of the chapters named the Emperor's Summoners, they were skilled in sorcery that other chapters feared dearly. They were not savage like other chapters who were blinded by rage and blood. The Emperors Summoners preferred to confuse their opponents with acts of war that they had never witnessed before. Unfortunately, their home planet was one of the giant necron tombs and as soon as it was awakened the planet was destroyed to the C'tan. The Emperor's Summoners were now left to wander space for eternity.

Emperor's Warbringers

Executioners

Exorcists

Fallen Angels

Fighting Tigers of Veda

Consult Inquisitorial Files for further information

Fire Hawks

Fists of Flame

Following the aftermath of the Second War for their homeworld, Tarsiss III, the Fists of Flame have renewed their vows to bring death to the enemies of the Emperor.
Traits: Take the Fight to Them; No Mercy, No Respite; Eye to Eye

Flesh Eaters

Flesh Tearers

See Index Astartes File

Grey Ravens

The Grey Ravens have been participating in a self-inflicted Crusade of Penitence for over a millennia. This endless conflict has taken a massive toll on their numbers, and the recovery is long and difficult.

Guardian Angels

Helion Legion

[[Image taken by Adeptus Arbite security system. No information available at this time.]]

Hells Dragons

Born of a world of fire and Brimstone the Hells Dragons are one of the toughest of the Marine Chapters in terms of Endurance, Physical Condition and Mental Strength. Many (well more than most chapters) of these mighty Marines are even selected for Grey Knight Trials. The Hells Dragons have little official battle record but those that are kept are tales of utter devastation and pure Loyalty to killing the enemies of man kind.

Founding during the Cursed 21st Founding the Hells Dragons Genetic make up has a defect, making the marines immune or at the least extremely resistant to Heat and Cold and poisons. Each Marine is as deadly as he is swift and precise. One of the greatest fighting forces the Imperium of man has crated. The Hells Dragons are Successors to the Imperial Fists.

Above is shown a Veteran from the 1st Company 2nd Squad.

Heralds of Ultramar

Howling Griffons

Imperial Castellans

Imperial Harbringers

Imperial Paladins

Imperial Paragons

A Ultramarines Successor Chapter. The Chapter's symbol is a grey sword over a black shield. They excel in urban combat. Prefering flesh over steel, the Imperial Paragons are very focused on infantry tactics. Their battlecry is: Show them the Light of the Emperor!"."

Imperial Talons

Invaders

Iron Angels

The Iron Angels have been watching over the Myraid Cluster in the Segmentum Obscurus. For hundreds of years, they have fought an endless war against the Tyranid infestation there until very recently, when they finally purged the xenos menace from the system.

Iron Hands

Knights Ascendant

A successor Chapter of the Dark Angels, The Knights Ascendant are a monastic order. Seekers of knowledge, they are often seen battling Thousands Sons for lost and Arcane Devices, only to purify them and place them in holy sanctuaries dedicated to the Emporer. It is said the red under their eye visors is a symbol of Redemption, that only blood will wash away the great stain of dishonor that has stained their father chapter.

Knights of Alyx

A crusading Chapter, the Knights of Alyx are unorthadox and uncontrollable. Where it not for their feiry devotion to the Emperor and the smiting of His enemies, the Chapter would have been declared Excommunicate Traitoris long ago. They work solely by their own doctrines, ignoring the Codex Astartes.

Legion of The Damned

Of all the legends of the Imperium, one of the strangest is that of the Legion of the Damned. The Inquisitors of Terra have amassed dozens of reports describing the inexplicable manifestation of these otherworldly warriors upon battlefields were the warriors of Mankind battle without hope against impossible odds. By all accounts their aspect is frightening and bizarre, a ghostly apparition of warriors from some bygone era or a time yet to come when all is lost.

Legion of The Lost

Cross-reference "Delta V Massacre."

Marines of The Emperor's Vengeance

The Marines of The Emperor's Vengeance operate from their Space Hulk Monestary, Colossus, and are entirely fleet based. The Chapter is supposedly at least three-thousand strong, although every attempt to prove this is met with polite ignorance by the Chapter's command echelons, who seem to have no concept of book-keeping. The Chapter is noted for its role in Operation Final Hour.

Marines Paladin

Sworn defenders of the Shrine of St. Olianus. The trim colour indicates the Marine's Company (in this case, 5th).

Raven Guard

One of the Founding Legions, the Raven Guard suffered terrible losses during the Horus Heresy, a fact that affects their Combat Doctrine to this day. They favour lightning fast assaults and suprise raids deep behind enemy lines.

Sapphire Dragons

The Sapphire Dragons are located in the Eastern Fringe, and are dedicated to fighting Tau. The chapter was formed during the Nimbosa conflict, when the Raven Guard abandoned the Dragons in an Epic battle. Due to the weaknesses of the Tau and the strengths of the Raven Guard, the Dragons arm themselves with Bolt Pistols and Chainswords. The chapter also has it's own, dedicated squad of Death Watch Kill team, that often lead the chapter to battle.

Scions of Sanguin

A Divergant Chapter of the Blood Angels, these marines fight there foes with such rage, that Inquistors were called forth to check the gene seed of the chapter. They were deemed sufficient, with only minor taints that were easily processed. However, there continue to be startling rumors of increasing numbers succombing to the Blood Rage. their lack of red coloring is perhaps a way to placate the Rage, hoping that will further push back the fury of an enraged Marine. This Veteran was recovered at the bottom of a pile of human traitors.

Shadow Lions

Rumoured to be founded by Asmodai, the great Interrogator-Chaplain of the Dark Angels, little is yet known about this mysterious chapter. Reports suggest that they strike hard and fast offering no mercy to the foes of the Emperor and the Lion.

Shadow Spectres

Sons of Chronos

The Sons of Chronos were founded from the Raven Guard to help defend against Black Crusades launched from the Eye of Terror. They are experienced in Trench Warfare, and are well respected by their fellow guardians of The Eye.

Sons of Dawn

A chapter form a jungle world, they have a habit of capturing enemy pykers alive to be used as tribute to the Emperor.

Soul Drinkers

A successor of the Imperial Fists, the Soul Drinkers attacked Adeptus Mechanicus interlopers during a sacred mission and refused to surrender to the Ordo Hereticus afterwards. Mutated and below-strength, the Soul Drinkers travel the void in a space hulk, battling Chaos as the Emperor wills without the shackles of the Imperium. The excel at close-combat engagements, where their Assault Squads rip the enemy apart, 'cold and fast.'

Steel Vultures

Recruiting from the fierce desert tribes of their homeworld the Steel Vultures practice a highly mobile form of warfare. They are renown scavengers who's Techmarines constantly push the Adeptus Mechanicus' tolerance by performing unsanctioned modifications on their equipment

Stonecutters

The Stonecutters are a highly secretive chapter with an unusual agenda. It seems that they are constantly searching the galaxy for a being they call the "Chosen One". The Chapter has a strange system of rank based purely on seniority and strives to maintain exactly 1000 members at all times

Storm Warriors

Stormbringers

The Stormbringers were founded as the Roan Hammers, using the Black Templars Gene Seed. They became the Stormbringers, linking themselves to the legends of their Homeworld, after the Chapter was almost entirely destroyed in its Founding Campaign.

Striking Talons

Once part of the Imperial Fists, this chapter is known for its all round combat ability and is led by mighty heroes. Their homeword, Suka, is one massive hive fortress.

Supernovas

The Supernovas recruit from a low gravity world, and their Battle Brothers are known to react with paternatural speed. They suffer from a physically deliberating defect, however, meaning their musculature takes many decades to properly assert itself. They also exibit several deviations from the Codex Astartes, such as "Tribal" Company organisation.

Tech Hunters

A Chapter founded and operated by the Adeptus Mechanicus, the Tech Hunters are tasked with locating, retrieving and protecting the ancient secrets of the technomagi. It is rumoured they recruit from Mars itself, but this is not confirmed.

Ultramarines

See Ref_File 2294-LA

Vengeance Angels

Successor to Blood Angels, They are trying to prove themselves above BA, but a taint of Chaos inflicts them.

War Bearers

White Consuls

White Jackals

The White Jackals were once known as the Black Jackals, until the Outsider campaign against the Xenos Mopani of Heirphan IV. Fighting alongside brother Marines from the Knights Veritas, the latter Chapter turned upon their own First Company and fellow Jackals. Once an Inquisitorial investigation lasting a decade concluded the chapter remained loyal, they were permitted to change their name to the White Jackals.

White Panthers

No information available at this time

White Reapers

Masters of guerilla warfare, the Reapers can fade into any envrionment, striking suddenly like wraiths, but are most adept at combat in snow, like their frigid homeworld.

White Scars

The White Scars were one of the Founding Legions. They fought alongside many other Legions in the Horus Heresy. They favor a rapid attack style of warfare focusing heavily on bikes, speeders and assault squads. For Khan, For the Emperor!

Alright, here's a couple I've come up with. The first is a project I'm currently working on while the second is just something I brainstormed up one day. The first may be a lil silly for this (given where the inspiration for it comes from), so I understand completely if you don't want to include it. However, I think I've managed to get them to fit into the 40k universe quite well so I'll let you decide

Anywho, on with the show

The Stonecutters

The Stonecutters are a highly secretive chapter with an unusual agenda. It seems that they are constantly searching the galaxy for a being they call the "Chosen One". The Chapter has a strange system of rank based purely on seniority and strives to maintain exactly 1000 members at all times

My latest Colour scheme for the Sons of Dawn. Gold metal doesn't translate well.

A chapter form a jungle world, they have a habit of capturing enemy pykers alive to be used as tribute to the Emperor.

This was the original color scheme I had more or less. A chapter called the Azure Hand. Suffered grevious losses in a number of campeigns, some question if they still exist. Rumour has it they were merged with another decimated chapter to form a new one.
