Default The Blazing Kitsunes (DIY chapter)

Blazing Kitsunes

The chapter known as the Blazing Kitsunes are unique that each one of them have a mutation that cause their fangs to grow longer and also silvery hair as soon as the geneseed of the chapter matures. Some attribute this to a supposed Space Wolves geneseed composition, but the proof of this theory is found wanting. They are known to be fiercely independent, and they also use a different force organization system, forming their brethren into groups of the same tribesmen as to the tactical squad of the Codex Astartes.

They are unique that they only have 9 companies of Space marines, each having a slightly larger number than a normal space marine company. The members of one company are always consisting of one tribe, with each tribe specializing in one aspect. Whether it is healing, or it is hunting each tribe have a role to play. In addition, each tribe are responsible for their own recruitment as the Companies are basically the leaders of their tribe, thus making them similar to the Salamanders chapter.

The 9 'tribes' are in turn lead by a Kyubi no Kitsune (nine-tailed fox), which will play the role usually associated with a Chapter Master in other Space marines chapter. The title comes from the fact that the chapter master is the leader of the 9 tribes and that a nine-tailed kitsune in the folklore of their people is a very powerful being. And indeed it takes a very charismatic, powerful and wise man to lead the 9 tribes, as each tribe does not always work with each other. He Chapter Master is often decided by the Kitsunes by sending the head of each company and fight with each other in a ritualistic battle both in terms of wits and also strength.

The Astartes have two weapons they primarily call upon; Bolter and sword. The act of firing the Bolter is not so much an act of war as an act of faith. The Blazing Kitsunes believe their Bolter is an extension of their soul, their righteous fury made manifest. To fire a Bolter in anger is to call upon the most destructive force the Marine can possess. Bolters are employed when there is no other course but total war.

No Kitsune would ever leave his Bolter behind. If the weapon is destroyed, the Kitsune must undergo a long ritual of cleansing, purifying his soul and severing the divine link with his lost weapon. Typically, the Kitsune will place a small token, such as a firing pin or a purity seal belonging to the Bolter in his weapon cabinet. He will then take a new Bolter, and pray with it within the Chapter's shrine. Finally, he will employ a Tea Ceremony with his Brothers (typically a superior, such as Sergeant or Captain, and a Tech-Sage). During this ceremony, he will be granted their blessing to take up a new Bolter.

This new weapon is then dismantled, and meticulously cleaned. It will only be rebuilt on the eve of its first battle. The first action of this new weapon, and indeed any Bolter, is considered to have great significance for the weapon's legacy. If its first shot misses its target, it is a very ill omen, whereas if the Marine attains a kill it is considered favored. Should the Bolter misfire, the Kitsune has been rejected by the Machine Spirit, and must seek a new weapon; he cannot fire that Bolter again.

The 9 tribes

The Tail of Healing

This tribe is known for its remarkable medical abilities, using the herbs of their environment to heal the ailments of the sick, However, in the modern age, they use the combination of both technology and the ancient ways of healing to tend to the ill. In the Blazing Kitsune, this means that most of their marines will be medics and apothecaries that will tend to the injuries of the marines, maintaining the purity of their geneseed, and also the roles of healers among their fellow tribesmen.

Most often than not, they will be seen practicing the trades of their profession on he villagers of their charge, making sure that their people are in good health.

Tail of Faith

The tribesmen of the Tail of Faith tribe are known to be very good storytellers and orators, and thus they are always traveling from village to village, telling tales of the Sky Emperor and the Great Kitsune, the being that blessed them with their world.

however, in the Kitsune's that will often mean that the people of the tribe will often be the religious leaders of the chapter, administering the faith of the Emperor upon their fellow space marines. The chaplains of the Blazing Kitsunes are unique that they do not wear a human skull for a helmet, instead they will wear the mummified head of a Great Fox.. The Chaplains of the chapter are known as the Kitsune-gao or fox-face as a result of their unique headgear. The skull motive of the Chapalin are not abandoned however, for they are intergrated in the chest of their power armor.

Unlike most Chapters, the Kitsune Chaplains have the duty of teaching the Kitsunes to excel in the rituals of the Chapter, such as the tea ceremony. Some have attributed this to the Chaplain being the head of ceremonies in the chapter.

Tail of Knowledge

The members of the tribe are known to be the most knowledgeable of the tribes, always keeping records of everything and understanding them. For some apparent reason, the entire tribe have the highest concentration of psykers among the rest of the tribes. Thus with this, their role is that of a Librarian. However they call their Librarians , the Honno no Kitsune (Flame Fox) as their Librarians are especially well known for their unique psychic powers, the mouths or tails that generate fire or lightning (known as kitsune-bi; literally, fox-fire), willful manifestation in the dreams of others, flight, invisibility, and the creation of illusions so elaborate as to be almost indistinguishable from reality.

Thus they are revered and feared by the rest of the chapter. However, the Librarians of the Chapter are not always send out in open battle as they are more often deployed as strategist and war-planners of the war effort.

Tail of Art

The tribesmen of this tribe are known to be artisans beyond compare, and they are the ones who are often seen doing what artisans does, from making buildings to providing the villages with the seeds of agriculture.

The tribe's role in the Kitsune war machine are of building fortifications and also maintaining the gears of war. Most of the equipment of the Kitsune's are filled with ornate decorations of folklore of the Kitsunes, and it is the job of the Tail of art to make those illustration.

Tail of Vengeance

They are known to be the most zealous and most spiteful of all the tribes, and thus the other tribes will often try not to make them in any way angry. However, in the Chapter, they serve the purpose of shock troops as their temperament is ideal for their job. Thus they are often deployed as assaulters.

They do however, have a friendship of sorts with the tribe of 'Tail of faith' as their zealousness and the "Faith tribe" comes hand-in-hand. Thus it is common that they are seen with the tribe of "Tail of Faith".

Tail of Destruction

The tribesmen of the 'Tail of Destruction are known to be as their namesake, destructive. They are often the most grim of the tribes, believing that death is but the beginning of a far greater journey . For this they play the part of being the Chapter's heavy weapons specialist, and thus they are commonly seen as devastators and also tank crews. Their attitude also sets them as being excellent sappers.

Tail of Silence

As the namesake of the tribe, they are stoic and cool-headed, taking pride in their silence and independence, more so than the other tribes. Thus they fill in the niche as the scouts and the snipers of the Chapter.

Tail of Fleet

They are known to be quick of mind and quick of body, and also quick to respond to any matters regarding their own. Thus most of the Chapter's flanking and rapid response comes from the members of this chapter

Tail of Strength

The members of this tribe are the strongest and the hardiest of the tribes. However, their behavior are more or less the amalgam of all the other tribes. However, they are easily the slowest among the tribes as their response are slower than average in regards to the people of their homeworld, although they are quicker than a normal human.

Appearance

Chapter Symbol

It is the face of a fox over a crusader symbol, black in color and surrounded by a small flame.

Homeworld

Colonized in the 39th millennium, this planet is beautiful and lush. Barley even touched by war. It's current Governor is Trakko Beam, who resides in the capitol city of Kurla. The man who colonised it was Talko Gurnison, a Space Marine of an unknown chapter (Space Wolves, the people say), who had decided to stay on the planet and build it into his own perfect land, with, a new Space Marine chapter.

Continents/Cities/Villages

Talko- The western continent of Talko Prime. It is mostly dense, but beautiful, jungles, bamboo forests, and it has a gorgeous countryside filled of farmsteads and small villages.

Kurla- Nestled in between two large mountains is the capitol city of Kurla. It is a large city, and the largest city of the planet. The majority of it is underground, in deep caverns beneath the mountains.

Tun- The name given for each village in the countryside. Each one is governed by a different member of the Tun family. They support great trade with the Imperium of Man.

Noru- A nice peasant village on the beach of Kri Island, located out in the middle of the Niri ocean. They are a pleasant fishing community, and fish most of the day to feed many Imperial mouths, both on and off-world.

Sento- A massive harbor city located on the coastline. Also here, is the starport of the planet.

Russin- A dark city, located in a cove on the westernmost side of the continent. It is filled with pirates and mercenaries.

Craff- A bad attempt at creating an underwater domed city. The city was completed with it's dome when a school of Krakos came and annihilated a portion of the dome, thus flooding the entire city. It was abandoned ever since.

Grol
- The eastern continent of the planet. This is mostly dense mountain ranges that have ancient Space Marine fortresses and temples bristling against them. It was named after the hero of the Golgothan insurgancy by it's inhabitants.

The 9 Tails- These are the villages that the Space Marines inhabit throughout (and within) these dense mountain ranges. For more information, see http://theblazingkitsunes.myfreeforum.org/about2.html

The Blazing Kitsunes chapter monestary
- It is the largest building in the mountain ranges of Grol. It's settled in between two of the largest mountains of Grol. It is in the shape of a pyramid. It goes very deep, filled with initiation rooms, practice-dueling chambers, sleeping quarters, operating rooms, apothecary chambers, dreadnaught chambers... It is almost it expands into the core of the planet itself, it goes so deep.

The Krak tribes- These are small camps of the nomadic tribes of barbaric humans that live out in the icy mountain passes of Grol. They are said to be very territorial.

The immense bamboo wall- A massive wall of incredibly thick bamboo that splits both of the continents. Some say that these are the poles that Talko used to first claim the planet for the Immortal Undying Emperor.

Oceans
The planet is split into two oceans.

Niri- A sparkling, crystal-clear salt-water ocean in in eastern side.

Grog- The name given to it by the Krak tribes, this takes up the eastern waters of the planet, and are usually treacherous and storm-filled. Also, many horrific creatures live in the deep here.

Sea creatures

Kroaki fish- The most common (and delicious) fish in the ocean. They usually swim in massive schools and are easily caught in nets. They are sold throughout most of the Imperium.

Hentai Eel- A long, pink serpent that dwells in the dark deep. Named after the horrific Chaos Marines that sieged the planet for 10 years straight.

Krakos- Deadly sharks with snouts that are made of bone so that they can ram into and break the bones of their victims.

Kraken- It lives deep deep down, on the ocean floor, and is rarely seen. It is massive, with tentacles that could crush even the toughest of armor.

Land creatures

Gurk- A horse-sized frog-like herbivore creature, named after the noise it makes.

Zenthral- A large reptile. It is carnivorous, but is rare, and lives far too deep in the jungles to be a threat, but there are injuries and deaths because of them.

Lol- A reptilian four-legged hoofed creature. They are herbivorous, and travel in packs/herds.

Zep- A reptilian carnivore that lives in the jungle. Many deaths are caused by this creature. They hunt in packs.

Buffgan- A mount that many peasants in the countryside, but it is native to Grog.

Kraalgan- A ferocious woolly wolf-like beast that resides in Grog. They hunt in packs and the Krak tribes usually tame them as pets.

Kitsune- A very very rare creature that resides mostly in the snowy pine forests of Grol.

Recruitment

Once a year, a single Kitsune tribe leader will travel to each of the 8 villages and the city to find some contestants. They collect 4 of the strongest men, of both mind and body, after several days of testing, and then the tribe leaders order them to stay put, and to look in the village/city well. In the well, there are many passage ways. One leads on a long and treacherous route to the Blazing Kitsunes headquarters. The initiates must now brave this, some will die on the way. Each trail is the same length, with all the same hazards. Each passage is around 30 miles long, going through sewers, caverns, tunnels of ice, an abandoned mine, a long-abandoned mining village deep in the mountain range... Once they finally reach the headquarters, they must fight each other until each of the tribe leaders says to stop, and then they would decide who joins who. It is a very odd way of recruitment indeed yet at least the initiates either die, or join. Either way, there are numbers added on. Once they decide, the chosen shall follow their tribe leader back to their village. Each one is nestled high in the mountain peaks, with a massive monestary built in the middle. And there, they are given the gene seed and the rest of the organs and implants. Once this is finished there is still more testing to go over before they officially join.

Warcry

It is mainly, "For Talko Prime and the Kyubi no Kitsune!!"

"For the Emperor!!"

History

They were founded near the end of the 39th millennium. At this point, they indeed had 10 chapters, like all others. Yet, something tragic occurred. The Hentai (meaning chaos/strange) Marines came and slaughtered the majority of their planet. It began a 10-year war between the Kitsunes and the Hentai. Soon, the 10th tribe succumbed to the darkness and left forever into the warp. From that point on they had long since recovered, and every single piece of writing containing the traitorous 10th tribe had been erased from the Chapter's fortress-monestary. Now, some millenia later, it has all been forgotten of this war, yet the Hentai marines still return once or twice a year for raids, but are easily fought off in a time period between a week and a month. They had also aided in the 13th Black Crusade. They do get interrogated alot and have many visits from the Inquisition.

The battle of Tyloo pass

This was the longest battle ever fought in the traitor wars of the Blazing Kitsunes. The Hentai Marines were making it through a coastline pass to take out one of the Kitsune's most sacred village, which held a church to the Emperor, a starport, and plus, it was the largest village on the planet. They had a plan. The Kyubi no Kitsune would bring a large task-force, along with the local PDF-militia, and they would hold off the invaders...
The enemy rush through the pass to try and break through the Kitsune's wall of shells...

The first battle is about to ensue...

They clash...

"We're in for one wild night..."

The Kitsunes launched a counter attack, along with the aid of the Imperial Inquisition, thus crushing the enemy then and there.

The Hentai Marines had no choice but to retreat, taking many slaves and the traitor Kitsunes with them.

Hey i have to admit this chapter is looking pretty nifty, for the warcry you could maybe look up Japanese war chants, quick question off the subject, how did you do that picture of your space marines appearance because the colouring and shading is brilliant but good luck with the chapted i'd like to see models painted like that and maybe to make the commanders stand out maybe paint glyphs of japanese words on there shoulders

I suddenly have the mental image of Space Marines partaking in a Tea Ceremony.

There would be rules as to how one carries his weapon, where one places his helmet, and then there are the "proper" subjects of discussion. These would revolve around the weather, veneration of the Emperor, and talking about the Genestealer skull with bullet hole that was placed in an alcove as something to talk about.

Not necessarily, given the nature of the basis for the background of this particular chapter idea, adding Bushido and the Japanese Warrior code type aspects seems entirely appropriate and could likely add a cool and unusual theme for your background.

Call me nerdy but .... wait I play warhammer.... anyway, MTG had a japanese themed card block about 2 years ago and they included the Kitsune in their lore. I dug this up as the illustrations might give you some inspiration.

hope that helps.

In reference to the earlier Tea Ceremony mentioned, read this:

It may prove most enlightening.
