Default Yay! Black Templars!

Hey all. I jsut got Codex: Black Templars, a box of Assault Termies and The Emperor's Champion (along with the very last pieces I needed to finish my Tau). In addition, I have a bunch of bolter marines from my friend and my Battle for Maccarage, and I'm going to use a SM sergeant for a very toned down Captain guy until I get a little more money together (my tab was $120!).

Anyway, I'm still working out my actual force, but I know it needs the following:

My Assault Termies in a Land Raider
A 5 or 6 man marine squad (BP/CCW) in a Razorback with Lascannon
Another marine squad on foot (with bolters)
Some assault marines

I can't decide whether to take the +1 Strength vow or the 3+ Hit vow... I think the 3+ hit but I'm not sure.

Also, where the heck is the profile for lightning claws? I've searched and searched and searched and its not there! What do they do?

This may be a silly question, but did you check that rulebook page where it describes special close combat weapons? I forget if they're on that page, but they might be since a large number of specialist CC weapons that were previously described only in codexes have been added to the rulebook

Ah, thank you Fish Ead. There it is. Seems sorta useful, but I can't decide my ratio of Thunder Hammers to Lightning Claws (I like the look of the Thunder Hammer much better, and both seem to be good choices).

Usually a good ratio for Lightning Claws and Thunder Hammers is 2:1, but it all depends on the kind of army you face... Lightning Claws are great for taking out loads of infantry while Thunder Hammers are designed to tackle larger targets and vehicles...

Hmm... so I'd do 3 claws 2 hammers.... Hmmm. Just hmm. The problem is that I mostly play Tau/Eldar, so both would be good- Hammers for nailing battlesuits and claws for getting rid of Firewarriors.

Anyway, what about the Vows? I'm seriously having trouble deciding between the 3+ Hit and the +1 Str/-1 Int.

woah woah woah, -1I? Screw that, you wouldn't be able to slaughter Tau or Eldar striking at the same time or worse... I'd go with 3+ to hit...

Tau have I2. And it would give me an extra STR for tank hitting. Seriously, a S4 Terminator hitting at S5 with a powerfist is S10... +1 on the Armor Penetration Roll for Tank Hunters means its freaking S11! That's hard to get, you know.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the official ruling on that vow by GW is that the PF becomes streangth 9, not 10 .

Personally, after all my Templar troubles, if you fight in an area with LOTS of psykers, take Abhor The Witch, Destroy the Witch, that 5+ and ignore minors comes in handy! And if you fight a 'Nid player with the Psycic Chior(lost of psycic screams) you ignore it completely. Otherwise I would have to say 3+ to hit.

I run three hammers, two claws, if it makes any difference. The last time I used them the hammers didn't even get to strike, everything was dead before it was their turn.

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

Personally, I always use 3+, simply because it plays to the type of list I use (assaulty), while the others are rather situational. +1S -1I makes them too slow for my tastes, while 6+ inv, no pinning but no cover saves means you can run forward a lot faster, but you'll probably die more. Abhor the Witch, Destroy the Witch is only good if you end up facing a lot of psyker, so its totally useless against Tau (Necrons too, I think), who you said you face a lot. I always use Accept Any Challenge, No Matter The Odds when building a "take-all-comers" list, because there are a lot of WS4+ enemies out there, so the ability to strike them at equal or better is always surprising for your opponent. The part about having to charge is easily overcome: maneuver so you won't be close enough for a charge if you don't want it. If you find a CC crusader squad is closer than you want and must charge, remember that your PF/PW man can have a bolter too, because he buys both a pistol and the power weapon/fist.

Plus, it was really funny once, when playing the Sisters of Battle and getting into CC with one of their CC-specific units (I think they were Seraphim). Upon announcing that I needed 3s to hit them, one guy watching says, "Huh? What do you have, Preferred Enemy: Humans?"

To which I responded, "No, I have Preferred Enemy: Everyone!" >

As far as Assault Terminators go, don't look at me, I don't have any. I've got squad of regular ones, but no Assault guys (they're on the to-buy list).
