Default what does it take to pilot a dreadnought?

this much i know. dreadnoughts are like giant, walking, life support systems with guns. the pilot inside the dreadnought would die if he were not inside. the pilots are considered to be great warriors and the dreadnoughts they pilot to be great weapons.

what i want to know is how did the pilot get in there in the first place. do you simply need to be horribly wounded in battle? do you need to have survived hundreds of battles? is there a council that nominates space marines to be enshrined in dreadnoughts?

what do you need to do to get put into a dreadnought?

Typically, dreadnaughts are piloted by mortally wounded Space Marine champions. They would have to have been a valiant fighter, skilled leader, or so forth. They would also have to not be completely dead when they are recovered. I would imagine that you would also have to have a dreadnaught empty and ready for them to pilot.

You have to have had you legs ripped off by a nid, as you won't fit otherwise

You have to be the best of the space marines, which means pretty damn hard, to be worthy of the "honour".

Once they recover the body, they cut off the limbs, and put them into the machine. They then attach the dreadnaught's limbs to the stumps of the marine. Then they plug in abunch of other crap and seal the sarcophagus shut. Done.

After a long while in my fluff in the golgotha campaign, I'm going to have my Emperor's champion be slaughtered almost to death after holding off a HUGE number of tyranids from a giant cathedral. They find his dying body after and put him in a dreadnaught, and a new champion is picked.

My bugs will be quite willing to slaughter him for you, if you wish. >
