simple question...
can a chapter taking Suffer not the alien to live take tau as their choice? they are xeno, but are not listed.

Stricly speaking, no. It wouldn't exactly be the greatest choice anyway since 90% of the tau you fight you'll end up hitting on 3s even without the skill

No, for the reason fish 'ead mentioned. If I had to take it, I'd pick Eldar. Two races, both with tricky units(Wyches, Harlequins).

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

Yes, Eldar are the best choice there. With Nids, you don't get the bonus against MC's (which is where the majority of your problem is going to be) and Orks aren't bad - but you just shoot them up. Tau - as mentioned above - are easy kills too.

same with the guard xenos fighters doctrine. the tau are really no problem, and tyranids probably too( for marines) but eldar...oh darn those wyches!!

I always thought the point of the doctrines was to tailor your army to fit your fluff, not your enemy or battle effectiveness

Yeah, that's what I say too, but not many people seem to do that.

True. But in this case even if there was one it would essentially mean nothing and thus no modification of the existing list needs to be done. Thus a player could easily just say "They hate tau" and get the same benefit as if there was a tau option for this trait. I think it's likely that this situation was forseen in not having an option for tau under the "Suffer Not the Alien to Live" trait due to this redunancy. I whole heartedly support the fluff, then traits, approach as this is how it was intended and applaud those who take this trait without knowledge of who they are about the play.

I do believe that the rule says that the models must be appropriately decorated with trophies of their hated enemies. So - if your chapter was going to hate Eldar - you would need Eldar heads, etc. So there is some fluff that is needed.

However, I agree with FT & Fish 'Ead that it really should all come down to fluff.

It does come down to fluff, that's why my chapter didn't take it. How often can one chapter encounter eldar to have preferred enemy against them instead of something more common, like orks?
