Default shooting out of rhino hatches

if you move 6" or 12" with a rhino can a marine still shoot a heavy weapon out of the hatch?

No. Plain and simple. If you shoot any weapons out of the hatches the user is counted as having moved, if the vehicle moves... to add.

Take the trait that allows you to field 2 flamers/plasma/ melta in a squad and you'll see the worth in that...

except that the weak armor of a rhino means that by the time you get close enough its probably been blown up.

Troops firing from inside the vehicle only count as having moved if the vehicle moves. You can remain stationary and fire a couple heavy weapons out of the top hatch if you want...but it's of limited use. Perhaps if an infantry unit with nothing but strength 4 weapons (or below) was advancing on your devastator squad, they could hop into their Rhino and use it as a bunker, but they'd have to forgo a turn's shooting to do it.

With power armour on your side you're probably better off fighting on foot.

Like Howloutloud said though, special weapons are best used in this role. Try a couple Meltagunners in there and revel in the dumbfounded look of shock and horror on your opponent's face when you race forward and pop his Leman Russ! >

You know the hatch rules helped me greatly a while back. Now this was with a somewhat more evil power armoured force, but it still applies. In the previous turn I had floored it up to a squad in a rhino, disembarked and unloaded some nice plasma and bolter death. The next turn a venerable dreadnought drop pods in around 6" away and tries to set my men on fire with the 'ol heavy flamer. So I could either stand my ground and hope for 5s to glance the darn thing, or hop back into the rhino, drive around the back and get rear armour shots. Lets just say it payed off nicely
