They'rei n the armory, under the Combi-Weapons description... it's just a bolter with a one-shot weapon (flamer, plasma, melta) attached...

I think in a lot of cases they are too many points for what they do. One shot weapons also have an annoying habit of missing. However I've seen them used effectively before. You just need to pick the right moment to let loose and pray the dice like you. A friend of mine likes to run them with squads containing 2 of the same type of special weapon. Makes for a nasty surpirse when a drop pod touches down and he fires 3 melta shots

So overall, kinda overpriced, but can be useful

I actually just finished painting a chaplain with combi-flamer and jumppack. This guy leads my assault squad which has two flamers. That's three flamer shots right before they assault, assuming there is anything left to assault. With him I don't have to worry about missing with the weapon and have the possibilty of thinning down troops before an assault which reduces greatly the amount of troops I would lose in not having taken the weapon.

Just an example of how I use them but without a distinct plan for them I think of them as kind of a backup weapon I'll take if I have extra points for it.

I personally like it, because on Helbrecht there is a combi-melta and it just comes in handy when fighting Khorn(mmmmmmm..... Khorn... Khorn Chowder, Corn on the cob, Khorn off the cob....)

Combi-weapon worth it? Hum...I'd say no. Too many points for too little.
And they are two-handed. And I want to keep my extra CCW attack.
Leave combies for Chaos. Go with the real stuff.
On HQs, go Bolt Pistol.

I concur. Of the three choices, I think the flamer is the best choice for two reasons:

1 - Because you only normally only get one or two shots out of your flamers anyway.
2 - Because template weapons hit automatically, so you can't waste your shot.

However, I still think your ICs are better off with the extra attack afforded by a bolt pistol.

Not to mention that a combi flamer is the cheapest one!

The only other time I'd consider a combi weapon is on a chaplain w/ terminator armour. A combi plasma gun could be nice because

1- Can fire two shots and then charge
2- You wouldn't have a 2nd weapon anyways because you're in Termi armour
3- Termi armour means even if you roll an overheat you'll probably be ok.

falstead, termi armour only makes heavy weapons move and fire it doesn't affect rapid fire or make heavy weapons assault, and you can still count as having two weapons.

However I like combi weapons, I have a combi-melta, combi-flamer and a combi-plasma in my entire army however as said they do tend to miss which is why master crafting is your friend, and the fact that you get to re-roll one missed bolter shot OR one failed plasma/melta shot.

However flamer is probably the best and cheapest, take it, the emperor commands you...
