I've seen a number of instances now of an Emperor's chamion being fielded with non-Templars armies. Is there an official ruling to allow this somewhere that I don't know about, or are people just twisting the rules?

Fairly certain that "The Emperor's Champion" became a Black Templars only unit after the 4th edition Space Marine rulebook.

I was quite sure it was BT only however people could be using and army that counts as BT i dont know.

You used to be able to take the champ in other armies, but once the newer marine book and BT one were released that pretty much ended the possibility of that

There's also the possiblity that the person had made an army using the BT list and just painted and called them something else. Some sort of BT successor chapter, perhaps?

You would think that every Chapter would have some sort of Emperor's Champion equivalent...

I would imagine that the companies of the Chapter nominate one brother from amongst their ranks to represent them, and there would be some sort of series of challenges culminating in a non-lethal arena battle to choose the Chapter's champion...

Hmmm... I guess I'll have to write it myself, since GW seem to be acting like wusses about it.

Actually GW already did that, thats what the Company Champion in the command squad represents. Many chapters make use of Champions and usually for many of th eindividual companies aswell. However only Crusading chapters (BT & BT successor types) use Emperor's Champions.

yes under the old rules/codex anyone could take an EC but only in the fluff did a few chapters ever do it, i.e. Black Templars, Imp. Fists, etc. pity, under the old rules they did not take up a HQ slot and were only 105pts!!!
