Default Battle Report - Space Marines VS Imperial Guard - 'No escape' (pic heavy)

As per Stam's request, I have consolidated all the turns from our recent community game so you don't have to wade through ten or so pages to see it all. Starting of course, with the army lists:

HQ 1

Commander - Captain McGanner

Unit Commander - Bustafer Jones

Options:
 • Bolt pistol

ELITES 1

Dreadnought - Revered brother Vorn

Unit Commander - Stam

Options:
 • Assault cannon
 • Dreadnought close combat weapon

255 points

Note - The model in the centre represents a Terminator with an assault cannon and powerfist...I wanted to make a cool model to represent my favourite sergeant but I didn't want to have to take him off as a casualty before an assault cannon armed model. On paper, the termie with the power sword represents the sergeant, but in fluff terms it's the guy with the hammer, Sergeant Krull.

Default Re: Battle Report - Space Marines VS Imperial Guard - 'No escape'

No escape

The decision to engage the planetary governor’s defence forces and execute governor Marlon himself was regrettable, but so was his decision to consort with Eldar pirates. Inquisitor Dagmar had uncovered the governor’s dealings with the Xenos months ago and had sent an official to investigate more thoroughly. As expected, the official never returned and Dagmar was forced to exact retribution for the governor’s transgressions.
A violent execution of the governor and his immediate staff had been planned by way of a single covert operative. An assassin of the Eversor temple was an ideal candidate, not only for their ability to get the job done but also their ability to inflict such catastrophic and horrifying damage to their intended target as to dissuade any would-be successors. Unfortunately this was not to be, as governor Marlon’s chief astropath had intercepted the Inquisitor’s message and tightened security to such a degree that nothing short of an army would be able to reach him.
And so, Inquisitor Dagmar mustered such an army for the task. The Phalanx, space-borne fortress-monastery of Imperial Fists, was in-system and Inquisitor Dagmar contacted chapter master Vladimir Pugh to inform him of the traitorous Governor Marlon. The wretched dog had no right to continue breathing and every breath he took was an insult to the Emperor. He must be crushed, utterly, along with all those that stood beside him.

The main bulk of the Imperial Fists task force landed via drop pod in the governor’s palace and began sweeping the complex room by room, ruthlessly gunning down all who dared oppose them. Meanwhile, all other potential escape routes were systematically secured by smaller detachments to ensure the governor had no possible means of escaping the Emperor’s wrath.

This is an account of the Space Marine’s consolidation upon landing pad #212...

Space Marine briefImperial Guard brief

Your detachment has been tasked with securing landing pad #212 in a concerted manoeuvre to cut off Governor Marlon's possible escape routes. The planetary defence forces have erected rudimentary fortifications and are prepared for your arrival. An entrenched Whirlwind battery will provide suppressive fire for the duration of your advance.Traitorous Space Marine forces have begun their landings in and around the capitol city. You have heard reports that they have already begun their assault on the Governor's palace. They came without warning or provocation and you know only that they must be held off long enough for the Governor and his staff to escape to warn the Inquisition of the Imperial Fists' betrayal.

Scenario Special Rules

Concealment (IG only), Infiltrate, Continuous Bombardment*

[tt]*Space Marine players will be given more detail on this via PM. Imperial Guard players need only know that their position is under bombardment from distant artillery.[/tt]

Mission objectives
There are two objectives to capture for this mission; the landing pad itself and the command bunker. To win the game, one side must either be in control of more objectives than the opposition at the end of the game, or they must destroy the opposing force to a man (broken units with no possibility of regrouping are considered to be destroyed). Anything else is a draw. To capture an objective, you must have at least one model from a scoring unit in base contact with it and no enemy scoring units within 6".

Reserves Game length

When available, reserves move on from the player's deployment zone board edge. The game lasts 6 turns. The Imperial Guard have the first turn.

Imperial Guard turn 1

Colonel Winters shouted above the massive reverberations of the Whirlwind battery’s bombardment. The Chimera next to him rocked as a missile impacted directly next to the tracks.
"Vox Officer Hrufflen, get that APC moving!"
"Sir, the crew says the gear's dislodged, they need a few minutes to fix it!"
"Damn... let's move then." He unsheathed his power sword, watching the gold basket hilt shine in the fires of war. He drew his bolt pistol, and began loping over to the landing pad. He fired two shots into the air to rally his men, and they followed him towards the pad. Colonel Winters passed through his men, his unsleeved great coat fluttering behind him as his medals dangled and clinked. Behind him, his personal standard waved proudly, a beacon of defiance against the Imperial Fists.
To his left, on the other side of Chimera, the Ogryn squad also lumbered toward the shelter of the landing pad, grunting and snarling as they went, taking pot shots at the encroaching Marines. They were dumb brutes, but they knew better than to stand in the open amid an artillery barrage.
At the rear of the Imperial Guard line, Corporal Ferraman was preparing his own artillery barrage. “Range…seventy metres! Bearing…two-two-five-zero mils!” His battery was a flurry of activity as the Guardsmen under his command prepared their mortars.
“Tube one, level!”
“Two, level!”
“Three, level!”
Observing his target through a pair of worn-out magnoculars he waited for the opportune moment, numb to the explosions around him. “Standby…Fire!” A series of thuds resounded as the mortars fired in unison. Glaring at the advancing Terminators, Ferraman felt a warm sense of satisfaction as the rounds found their mark. His pleasure turned to contempt as the Terminators marched through the swirling dust clouds undaunted and unscathed.

Sergeant Bull was out of his foxhole and moving mere moments after the first Whirlwind round had impacted their line. The fire support squad behind them was also moving, hurrying south towards the Basilisk.
“Let’s go! Move it!” He growled, grabbing his vox operator by the back of his collar and hauling him to his feet. Twenty metres to his left, the lieutenant and his squad were taking cover behind the command bunker. “Coop, take out that fething Whirlwind!” He yelled at his grenadier. Guardsman Cooper sprinted to the front of the squad and took a snapshot from the hip. The grenade glanced harmlessly off the vehicle as it rumbled to a halt and elevated its launcher into firing position. Cooper cursed under his breath, hurriedly rotating the magazine of his weapon to load another krak grenade.
To the south of Sergeant Bull’s squad, the Basilisk crew were similarly unlucky attempting to hit a fast moving Imperial Fists Rhino. The round exploded behind the speeding vehicle, peppering its armoured hull with shrapnel. They had to take it out, and quickly. If it were to breach their lines, they could lose the entire left flank!

Default Re: Battle Report - Space Marines VS Imperial Guard - 'No escape'

Space Marines turn 1

Brother Sergeant Krull bared his teeth with unabashed spite as his Terminator squad ripped into the hapless infantry unit, shredding men and equipment alike. Behind them, the Whirlwind levelled its launcher and added to the mayhem, obliterating the helpless Guardsmen. They didn't stand a chance. From the far left flank, a frag missile flew with unerring accuracy into the unit to dispatch yet another unfortunate soldier. Panic and disorder reigned supreme among the planetary defence forces; every unit was fighting independently of the other, desperately trying to fend off the encroaching Space Marines. The Imperial Fists on the other hand, masters of siege warfare and veterans of innumerable campaigns, coolly coordinated their fire to annihilate one unit at a time. With the revered brother Vorn advancing in support of the Terminators, nothing short of an act of God could save the left flank from the might of the Imperial Fists’ advance, yet still they fought. Whether it was grim determination or sheer desperation, the Guardsmen under Colonel Winters’ command advanced through the maelstrom to take up position under the landing pad.

On the right flank, Captain McGanner and squad Varus sped forward in their Rhino under heavy fire from all directions. If they could hold out just a little longer, nothing would be able to stop them. Single-handedly, they would secure the command bunker. So much rested upon them and with the rest of the task force engaged further north, there would be no support should things take a turn for the worse. The Captain inhaled sharply through gritted teeth as explosive ordnance rocked their vehicle. Fire and fury flowed through his veins, and with every passing moment he became more certain that victory would be theirs.

Imperial Guard turn 2

Colonel Winters yelled over the din of the Chimera’s engine as it rumbled forward to engage the enemy Whirlwind, “Sergeant Palaski, hold the line!” The sergeant raised his laspistol in acknowledgement and led his men round the corner of the landing pad to take up firing positions in preparation for the enemy assault.
With Sergeant Palaski in place on the north side of the landing pad, the Ogryns stormed headlong into enemy fire along the south edge to engage the Space Marine scouts in close quarters. There was little they could do to stop the assault as the mutants barrelled into them, ripper guns blazing. Two Marines fell immediately to the onslaught as the gargantuan creatures stomped around the corner. Brother Silas looked on in horror as Draeg was lifted off his feet, impaled upon a bayonet as long as his arm. The Ogryn grinned broadly as it tossed his limp corpse to one side like a rag doll. Silas raised his bolter and fired from point blank range, determined to go out in a blaze of glory.

Meanwhile, corporal Ferraman looked on through his magnoculars at the steadily approaching Terminators as his second salvo landed with horrifying accuracy. A sly grin crept across his face as only four Terminators emerged from the smoke. But they were still coming.

Further south, the fire support squad had its own problems, the Space Marine rhino was tearing towards their position and nothing seemed able to stop it. Krak grenades, plasma bolts and explosive rounds hammered against its hull like drops of rain. They may as well be spitting at it, and at the rate it was closing, they’d soon be able to!

Default Re: Battle Report - Space Marines VS Imperial Guard - 'No escape'

Space Marines turn 2

Brother Sergeant Tanner slashed, parried and head butted the marauding Ogryn thugs that had brutally murdered two of his men, but he knew he was fighting a losing battle. A square blow from the butt of a Ripper gun knocked him to the ground and as the creature levelled the weapon at him, he knew it was over. Suddenly, the Ogryn was blasted against the wall and reduced to a mangled mass of tattered flesh by a concentrated burst of assault cannon fire. Revered Brother Vorn had joined the fight. The aged Dreadnought clanked noisily into combat and hammered one of the two remaining mutants against a support strut with its giant mechanical claw. The creature writhed in Vorn’s grip, fighting against hope to break free. Its howls of agony were cut short with a sickening crunch.
Pulling himself to his feet and snatching up his weapon, Tanner looked on in awe as the venerable fighting machine hurled the Ogryn’s corpse to one side and set off in pursuit of the last remaining survivor, hell-bent on vengeance and destruction.

To the south, Brother Sergeant Krull of the Terminator squad was on a similar mission of Vengeance. Having lost one of his men to mortar fire, he had seen fit to hunt down and destroy the battery responsible. And find them he did. Rounding a cluster of foliage, he caught sight of the mortar position. Krull’s lips curled back into a snarl as the Guardsmen commanding the battery slowly lowered his magnoculars, a look of sheer horror on his face. As one, the Terminators raised their weapons and unleashed an appalling torrent of firepower into the hapless Guardsmen. The men were shredded in an instant, some cleaved in two by the sheer weight of fire. In a matter of seconds, all that remained was a hideous jumble of mangled bodies, ragged shreds of torn flesh and ruined equipment. Vengeance was satisfied.

On the Space Marine’s right flank the Rhino came to a sudden halt and before it had even rolled back on its suspension, half the Marines of First Tactical were on the ground and moving, led by the fearless Captain McGanner. As the Rhino rumbled forward and Whirlwind fire thundered into the nearby Fire Support Squad, the Marines ran headlong at the command bunker, firing bursts of bolter fire and tossing in frag grenades. The Command Squad entrenched within the bunker snapped off a few shots under the barrage of bolter shells and managed to fell a single Marine, but it wasn’t enough…not nearly enough. In mere moments, the Emperor’s finest were over the wall and toe to toe. Captain McGanner leapt over the sandbags and bellowed in fury as he brought down his massive great axe, the junior officer was cleaved asunder in one mighty blow. It was over in moments for the Command Squad and the Marines had taken the bunker.

Default Re: Battle Report - Space Marines VS Imperial Guard - 'No escape'

Imperial Guard turn 3

It had become a desperate struggle around the landing pad. As a terrified Ogryn barged its way past Sergeant Apollo, a meltagunner from the command squad and another from the armoured fist squad added their fire to that of the Chimera in a valiant effort to bring down the marauding Space Marine Dreadnought.
As the guns fell silent and the smoke cleared, the Chimera commander leaned out of his cupola to see what had happened. The Imperial Fists' war machine lay in ruins. If they could hold out against the Terminators and the slowly advancing tactical squad, they could hold the landing pad.

Further south, the Fire Support squad lay low in their shellscrapes a Whirlwind missile turned their world into dust and noise. To their left, the Basilisk pivoted to lay it massive gun onto the tactical squad in the command bunker. With a thunderous boom, it blasted the sandbag emplacement apart. The gun number one atop the Chimera's deck observed the shattered bunker while his crew hurriedly reloaded behind him. To his horror and amazement, most of the Marines were unharmed.
"HE, PD. Load!" He yelled. "Depress! Depress!" The Heavy Bolter thundered away at the Marines as the barrel of the earthshaker lowered to its maximum depression. If they couldn't stop them now, it was all over...

Default Re: Battle Report - Space Marines VS Imperial Guard - 'No escape'

Space Marines turn 3

The chaos in the centre of the battlefield became a vortex of swirling mayhem as Brother Sergeant Krull's Terminator squad stormed in to avenge the fallen brother Vorn. Moving with uncharacteristic speed, the Terminators charged towards the Chimera, a blur of yellow armour and muzzle flashes. Advancing behind a fusillade of assault cannon fire and Storm Bolter shells, they reached the object of their hatred. As Brother Lyman clambered onto the hull, making his way towards the commander's cupola, Brother Lazarus reached out with his powerfist, tore a hole in the driver's hatch and blasted the opening with his storm bolter from point-blank range.
The defence forces had considered the destruction of the Space Marine walker a triumph; a step closer to victory...but now it dawned upon them that it would be their undoing. For the scout squad, most indebted to Brother Vorn for his timely assistance against their Ogryn aggressors, it was personal. Hell itself had never seen such fury. Sergeant Tanner and his two remaining men stormed in through enemy fire, ducking and weaving, to hurl themselves at the armoured fist squad. Tanner butt-lashed one Guardsman to the ground, kicking another's weapon out of his hand. The two marines behind him fired at point-blank range, ripping into the bewildered Guardsmen before lunging forward with combat knives, intent on mayhem. Bloodied, beaten and scarred, they slashed and shot their way through the terrified men. Tanner parried a bayonet with his boltgun and grabbed his assailant with both hands, letting his weapon hang by his side. He viciously head-butted the soldier, breaking his nose, before proceeding to smash him against the side of the stricken Chimera. With his super-human strength, the Guardsman was dead after the second blow and the sergeant hurled his broken body into the advancing command squad before snatching up his weapon and unloading the last few rounds in his magazine into the fleeing soldiers. Turning to face the command squad, he identified the officer commanding; he'd have vengeance or die trying.

Meanwhile, the Space Marine's right flank was being violently secured by squad Varus and Captain McGanner. The Captain courageously crossed open ground as the Autocannon gunners desperately tried to cut him down. He finally reached them and immediately cleaved their leader in two with his great axe as he foolishly came at him with a combat knife. He would make short work of these Guardsmen.
To his right, Brother Sergeant Varus and his men had gone after the Basilisk. The Sergeant moved with super-human speed and was on the deck of the vehicle before the gun number one could bring his rifle to bear. Varus grabbed the weapon with his power fist and snapped it in two like a twig before jamming the muzzle of his bolt pistol in the man's eye and pulling the trigger...

Imperial Guard turn 4

Captain McGanner was ruthless as he was swift. One by one, he slew the autocannon crewmen as they snatched up their rifles to meet him in combat. He was a swirling dervish of desruction; battering and cleaving the guardmen who dared oppose him. He swept one of the men off his feet with the haft of his axe and brought down the blade to finish the job. The last remaining survivor saw fit to turn flee, but there was no escape. Wrenching his axe free from the corpse at his feet, McGanner raised is left arm and shot him in the back. It was a fitting death for a coward.

Default Re: Battle Report - Space Marines VS Imperial Guard - 'No escape'

Space Marines turn 4

On the PDF right flank, Sergeant Palaski's infantry squad cautiously advanced to the north-west corner of the landing pad. Rounding the corner, he caught sight of the enemy Whirlwind lying in wait.
"Take cover!" He yelled to his men, tackling the nearest solder to the ground. As one, the unit sandbagged, face down in the dirt. But the warning came too late for Guardsman Caine, who had just a moment to contemplate the consequences of his slow reflexes as the missile came screaming over his sergeant's head and hit him square in the chest. In a violent and noisy instant, Caine was evenly redistributed over a five metre radius, reduced to a sloppy mess that covered most of his unit. The man closest to him had been peppered with shrapnel in the resulting explosion and lay still in the dirt as earth and sodden chunks of flesh rained down. Palaski clambered to his feet, reeling from the blast, but alive none the less. However, things were worse than he knew, the look in Higgins' eyes said it all.
"Incoming!" Palaski rallied his men for the oncoming assault, "Stand to!" Sergeant Grigg of third tactical and six power armoured Space Marines were right on top of them. A volley of Bolter shells cut two men down where they stood before they could even prepare themselves. As the first Marine lept over Caine's tattered remains, Palaski took a snap shot with his las pistol which bounced harmlessly off the Marine's left pauldron. It was only then, when the Astarte stood mere feet from him, did he realise how bad it was. This was the first time he'd seen Space Marines up close; they were big...really big. Palaski swung his chainsword as the warrior lunged for him, but the Marine simply batted the blow aside with his forearm and barged into him with all his weight. For the briefest moment as he tumbled to the ground under the massive bulk of the Power Armoured soldier, Palaski wondered if this was what it felt like to get hit by a train. As he hit the ground and his rib cage crunched and splintered inside him, he stared into the blue sky, his fighting spirit as crushed as his broken body. The last thing he saw was a big, yellow armoured fist rushing towards his face...then it was over.

Brother Sergeant Varus and Captain McGanner on the Space Marine right flank made short work of the Basilisk crew. With a quick gesture, Varus directed Brother Camus to destroy the gun. Camus effortly loaded one of the Earthshaker's massive shells backwards, followed it up with a frag grenade and dropped the breach. First Tactical stood well clear as the explosion blasted the ordnance to bits. Their work here was done.

The fight raged on in the centre of the battlefield. Though they had fought courageously, Tanner's scout squad was no more, having finally been overrun by the command squad. Having finished with the Chimera and relocated to a better firing position, the Terminators prepared themselves for the command squad's valiant last stand...
