Default Commander

Being tempted by the commander box and some random bitz I have come across, I have decided to make my very own:

Commander
Mastrer-Crafted Power Weapon
Bolt Pistol
Combat Shield
Artificier Armor

121 Points

Mainly used to advance with my troops as a serious threat to enemy troops

You need something to protect him against insta-kills and AP attacks, like the adamantine mantle or iron halo. That's a much better choice than the artificer armor, since most units he will face will have armor-ignoring melee attacks (and a 5+ save against powerfists isn't great), and most AP3 shooty weapons are AP2 or better anyway. As for his offensive gear, great!

Yeah, the adamantium mantle is clutch here. I just worked out a new, rather pricey commander last night. He has a jump pack, mantle, power weapon, plasma pistol, and combat shield. Throw on terminator honors for a close combat machine. You can drop the plasma to keep costs down, or the jump pack if he has a comand squad, but this guys is pretty nasty. On his own he can consitantly take out 5 man terminator squads and keep going. A tac. squad doesn't have a prayer. Goodbye necrons, no WBB. You get the picture.

That's perfect

/edit/

...as long as you use and abuse that IC status to keep him from getting lascannoned to death ;D

I usually feel no use for the mantle.
I'd recommend you to go with the Iron Halo instead of the shield and mantle.
It's cheaper and gives a good save.
But if you look for a commander looking good, modeling wise.
You could make the mantle/cloak and shield ornamental.
They look good on the model, without actually being wargear.

I don't know about that. I think it depends what army you fight most often. If you expect to encounter a lot of power fists, the mantle will be a lifesaver (literally), but if it's just meagre power weapons then the Iron Halo would certainly be a better choice.

I was never a mantle fan till this week. It is very expensive, and it is your only special item, so it is tough to give up the Iron Halo. But check this out: no more buried powerfist problems. No worries if you get a little ahead of the army and swallow a krak missle. You can challenge an MC and not just get pulped.

Here's a neat trick. Take the mantle on a Chaplain with a tooled up command squad. When you take incoming AP3 instakill shots (say a krak missle) put it on the chaplain. seems silly, right? But wait, you get a 4+ invulnerable save. Then, if he fails it, use the mantle to take only one wound. since the weapon no longer causes instant death, you can use the apothicary to ignore the failed invulnerable save, and the Chaplain is right as rain.

I don't have a marine codex on me at the moment but I belive the phrasing on the Narthecium is such that a weapon only needs to be strong enough to cause instant death in order to negate it. It's irrelevant weather or not the model itself is immune to it, if the weapon is strong enough to trigger it then that hit is to powerful to be "mediced"

It's still a cool idea though on how to preserve marines, since your chappy will still have a 50% chance of bouncing non threatening lascannons off himself. Hell give him a suit of artificer armour and then he can really be a Krak magnet!
