Default starting a Raven Guard army

I have decided to collcet Raven Guard.
my problem is what to buy first.
i have enough money to buy the SM battleforce and a chaplain with jump pack to go with the assault marines that come in the battleforce, but i dont really want the rhino as my tactical marines will be one of the main firing lines as my assault marines advance on the enemy. i also wish to buy a squad of SM scouts with sniper rifles, but am also unsure as what to get first.
(i wish to verse all different sorts of forces, i also plan to mainly play in cities of death, but wish to eventually enter competitions)
so it could be whittled down to this:

1) should i buy the battleforce and just have the rhino on the side should i need it one day, or wish to rush reinforcements up to the front line?

or

2) buy the tactical, combat, and assault marines seperately and buy the scouts with sniper rifles, and possibly some thing else-(if so, what?)

anyone with other suggestions/combinations please feel free to say something as i would like as much help as possible.

Well for a Raven Guard force I would suggest getting the following:

Jump Pack Chaplain
Tactical Squad
Assault Squad
Assault Squad
Devastator (your choice of heavy weapon)
Devastator (your choice of heavy weapon)
Special Weapon marine (whatever you chose)

With the bits you get in the assault marine sprues you can easily make two sergeants for your tactical squads. Two of 5 lets you take two heavy weapons and two assault weapons. You also get two 5 man assault squads and a Chaplain to lead one. To top that off you can get shrikes model for a master to boost your marines leadership and simply go with the pair of lightning claws setupo. Later if you want you can use the model as shrike but for now you can use him as a simple master to lead your second assault squad.

So in essence what that gets you is two firebase infantry squads and an equal number of mobile assault squads. A nice start for a fast and mobile type of army like the Raven Guard.

thank you for that.
i just realized that by the time i am able to next get to the GW, i will be able to buy they battleforce, 2nd assault squad, and chaplain with jump pack.

is the battleforce advised for a Raven Guard force? because it would give me pretty much all the tactical squads i would need, as well as scouts which i like because they have the power to destroy units from bushes and drive the opponent insane deciding whether to go after them or not.

when you said devastator, did you mean devastator squad, or individual marines with heavy bolters etc?

I meant individual marines. To add to your small tactical squads and form small las/plas squads for example.

Concerning the battleforce whether you get it or not depends entirely on whether you will use all the units in it or not. If your not going to use the rhino and have little use for the scouts other than drawing your opponent around I might suggest simply getting the specific units you desire. However since raven guard relly on a light strike force that is very mobile I would suggest going with those perchases. Then you could form your tactics as follows:

The assault boxes will give you enough parts to give both tactical sergeants power weapons. Designate one squad with a plasma gun and missil launcher for long range support. Give the other a melta gun and the smaller of the two. This can advance slowly to take objectives and use the rhino for mobile terrain while it gets there. Heck the rhino could even roll off and get blown up in the middle of an open field to give cover to the assault marines. The scouts can infiltrate again to cover an objective and secure your flanks. One tactic I find highly useful is moving the assault marines up an enemy flank containing a portion of their support weaponry. Use cover to stay out of sight until you get within charge distance and then leap out and rush into combat. With any luck you will be able to sweep the flank away with your chappy and the two assault squads and then move on. Give the assault marines melta bombs and they can even wreck any tanks in the way. Which is actually preferable as then that gives you cover to hide behind from the other enemy flanks return fire. If the enemy focus' too much fire on the assault marines your own heavy weapons can pour into them and your slowly advancing tac squad can move into rapid fire range.

In any case good luck starting your new army. The Raven Guard are a very cool chapter to play.

I would note however, that Raven Guard do make you use your transports as a fast choice. So if you do get the battle force and use the rhino, you will lose one of your fast attack slots on the force orginization slot.

Personally I would just buy a couple of units of scouts and some more assault marines.

If you get the battle force you could always just mail order a preadator or whirlwind sprue and use the rhino chasis to make a support vehichle.

I gotta say those sprues are more expensive than I would've guessed, at $18 to make a full heavy tank. Luckily for tau the hammerhead sprue is only $6. :P

I leave the top hatches of my Rhinos loose, so I can replace them with turret rings. That way, with my assorted spare turrets, I can turn them into Razorbacks, Whirlwinds or even Predators...although Predators without Sponsons are a mistake.

If you do it that way, a Rhino chassis is always useful to have because it can be cheaply refitted to be almost anything else!

you were saying that you get a rhino and an assault squad in a battle force. no. you get a command squad, a razorback, a combat squad and a tactical squad.......................... well thats what we get in australia.

personaly i would get
shrike
a tactical squad
a sniper squad
a assault squad
and a landspeeder

this comes to 190 australian dollars or there abouts and gives you a great starting point for a raven guard army.

He is talking about the new battleforces. A Tau Megaforce, Space Marine Battleforce 2006 and Space Marine Megaforce 2006 are coming out/already out.

The new battleforce has if I remember:

15 Tactical Marines
5 Scouts
5 Assault marines
Rhino

The megaforce has:

Commander
5 man Assault squad
5 Sniper scouts
Dreadnaught
Predator
Rhino
15 Tactical marines

but thats off my memory it should be on the uk and us sites but Im not sure when australia, canada etc will get their inventory updated.
