Assault cannon & heavy bolter. Rips through infantry, fairly cheap, and can pop a tank if necessary.

You forgot Ravenwing's option to have MM and AC :P

Multi-Melta and Heavy Flamer for me. I know, I know, conflicting weapon types...but the Land Speeder is an extremely versatile creature. It can be equipped to tackle any unit type with weapons of varying ranges and can reach any point on the table in moments.

If you find your opponent is making his advance with tanks; send in the speeders. If he deep strikes an infantry unit behind your lines; send in the speeders. They can be deployed against anything and get up close to put short range weapons to use quickly...so I like to have the weapons to counter whatever my opponent springs on me. My Speeders are my Quick Reaction Force.

I absolutely adore: Standard Heavy Bolter Speeder

It's the cheapest, which means I can get several. It has the best range for cost. And the heavy bolter is not flagged as "must destroy" while an assault cannon instantly flags it for death. I prefer my speeders to be less aggressive and simply zip about, taking small pot shots. Typically, no one bothers firing at them because they're insignificant compared to other units. That way, they tend to survive battles from time to time intact, and scoring. Fast, simple, cause great damage, and can take a hit or two without sweating too much. The price for that, is retarded good.

Cheers!

I don't think 50 points for a Heavy Bolter is cost efficient, except for serving as scoring units. Do you really find them combat effective? Or do they just harass the enemy and capture objectives for you?

I can't agree with you Malveaux. With the Assault cannon, you more than double the speeder's firepower for half the cost. It might be an ok scoring unit, but then again, I'd rather have a better killing unit.

Mal does have an excellent piont. They do last a lot longer than an AC speeder. That said, they should do more damage too (last longer = more turns of firing).

Heya,

Heavy bolters in the space marine army are almost always cost efficient. It's the cheapest most flexible weapon we have in every single force organizational slot. Also, cost effective is relative and not so simple to justify, other than personal opinion and a vacuum math example. I'd rather avoid that, and simply say that while sure, you are paying quite a bit of points for "just a heavy bolter" you have to consider the rest of the force and the enemy. Do I find them combat effective? Absolutely. It's why I use it and why it's my favorite. I only take two, and the rest of my force is a lot heavier with lots of moving units, so without their "scary gun syndrome" attached, they tend to be the least shot at unit in most of my games that I use them in. They don't just harass, they cause damage. 4 or 5 turns of actual damage dealing is a lot, when you think about a vehicle. Think about how many turns your Tornado with an Assault cannon actually gets to fire both of it's weapons out of the 6 turns of the game. Sure, it may do a spectacular kill with the assault cannon on a lucky roll, but one cannot always expect that, nor call it reliable to both survive, fire, and get the one out of six chance of it being a more critical hit. Don't get me wrong though, assault cannons are very powerful and I love them. And I like assault cannons on land speeders. But, they simply are not my favorite, when for 20 points more than the cost of a single Tornado, I can get two normal speeders, which take twice the amount of damage and deal very good damage themselves for a very good price. And scoring victory points and taking objectives is how you win the game, not just being cost effective. It happens to work in my setup, and I like them that way.

You don't have to agree with me. This isn't about "what's the best X to do Y in a vacuum." It's about what's your favorite of a unit type and it's configuration. However things work for you are up to you. I'm not telling anyone that something is a better choice.

-- It's merely, my favorite. Eh?

Cheers!

I go with heavy bolter and assault cannon because you can deep strike a unit of speeders behind the lines and do massive damage to both infantry AND vehicles. Also, I like the assault cannon...DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA!!!
