Default Starting a Silver Skull Army

I am trying to put together a Silver Skull Space Marine army and I would like some help in some of their choosing weather they should fallow strictly to the codex, or have a divergence? I usually base this on their background, but all I could find for the Silver Skulls were a small artical on Wikipedia. If you have any background info, or any suggestions on if they should be strict codex or divergence, please tell me. Thank You.

Its up to your personal preference really. Ive never come across any fluff for that chapter myself and I would not expect there to be much if any on them. That leaves it up to you really. What do you want to do with the army? The traits let you play around with how your force works quite a bit and can be a lot of fun but personally Im sticking to strictly the codex with the Ultramarines. Thats the way Ive chosen to play it though and the traits can be used to really tailor a force to fit your personal preferences. A very fast, highly mobile army, an extremely cc oriented force and many more. It just comes down to how you want your marines to be.

in the old SM codex I found a bit of fluff that suggests that they have no notable gentic deviance from the "normal" space marine.

So if you want to go with a divergence I would only take one advantage.

Well genetic deviance and the traits are really two different things. A genetic alteration results in something like the Blood Angels or Black Dragons but a trait seems to represent an alteration of doctrine and organization which may or may not have anything to do with the genetic integrity of the chapter.

yeah, but in my experience the more genetic deviance a chapter has the less it will adhere to the Codex Astartes. For example the Space Wolves have major genetic divergence and do not pay much attention to the works of Roboutte Gulliman, but the Blood Angels who have minor gentic divergences such as fangs and psychotic urges, which if you think about it are plusses in a space marine, only really have the Death company and the rest is the same as say the ultramarines who exhibit no genetic mutation, and follow the codex to the letter.

So if the Silver skulls have no additional organs or have no strange DNA it stands to reason that they would be a mainly adherent chapter

This is all i know of the Silver Skulls

While vile mutants still draw breath, there can be no peace. While obscene heretics' hearts
still beat, there can be no respite. While faithless traitors still live, there can be no forgiveness."

- Legiones Astartes Silver Skulls' Catechism of Hate, Verse 1 of XXV

The Silver Skulls are a Successor Chapter of the Ultramarines, and are a Codex Chapter.

The Silver Skulls were first brought up in 1987 - seen in RT rulebook and RTB01 box

FOUNDING: Uknown ( 3rd - 13th )
SEED: Ultramarine Stock

PRIMARCH: Roboute Guilliman
Chapter Master: - -

ENGAGEMENTS: Assault on Minogue K
4th Quadrant rebellion
Numerous Ork wars

Colour: Silver armour with black helmet stripe (from 2E)

Fought in the CORINTHIAN CRUSADE with Calgar elected leader of Marine force including Ultramarines, Lamenters, Marines Errant and Angels of Absolution.
It was a7 year crusade that delayed the Orke empire of Charadon
invasion of Waaagh Argluk by 30 years.

GARANDA II Ash wastes. Warlike nomadic tribes. Marine
recruitment world for Silver Skulls

As far as I can tell they are a first founding chapter that was never really discussed much by GW nr listed with the original twenty. I remember reading somewhere that the Inquisition wated to investigate them though but I cannot remember why? Perhaps there seed is not so pure?

Genetic deviance can be a cause for divergence but if you look at the majority of the traits they have nothing to do with genetic makeup at all. In fact I point to a chapter that does not have abnormal mutations or out of wack genes, the Black Templars. Yet they are, in their own way, just as divergent from the codex as say the Space Wolves. I also point to the Black Dragons who have far more genetic malformities than the Blood Angels but have not veered from the codex much more than the BA, about the same Id say actually.

While most chapters with genetic malformities do have some keen divergences from the codex organization not all chapters that deviate from the codex have messed up genes.

Oh and bebe thats some nice info you dug up. I wish I had access to that material.
