Default Deathwing

Are the Deathwing armies made up entirely of Termies?

You can add any land raider variant ( including prometheus) and dreadnoughts ( including mortis)

sort of...

Land raider Crusaders are a 0-1 choice and can only be taken as a heavy.

the prometheus land raider and mortis dreadnought (and that other land raider, can't remember the name) are forgeworld so you have to have your opponents permission.

the rest of the army is pretty self explanatory and quite fun.

Might do them. They look cool, they're marines, and they're governators :P. Here's what I'm planning to get

1 terminator captain
2 squads of terminators
1 squad of melee terminators
1 rhino
1 copy of Codex: Dark Angels
some paints too.. hmm... expensive...

Right, Deathwing armies can take Termies as elites, troops and fast attack. You can take dreadnoughts as elites or heavy support and you can take land raiders for heavy support and to carry characters and command squads around. (charcters get termie armour really cheap about half the orignal cost!)

Now yes this sounds cool and the models look good but the deathwings worst nighmares are:

a) Khorne Berzerkers with Khornate chainaxes

b) Genestealars and Genestealer armies

c) Slugga boyz

Just want to know, why are you getting a rhino. Deathwing can't use them. Also you might want to rethink the melee terminators unless you plan on getting a Land Raider Crusader. And last thing is you might want to get the new terminator chaplain instead of a captain, as you won't need the masters special ability with the deathwings stubborn ability.

Looks like a beautiful (but expensive) start to a deathwing army. let's see all together that should come to roughly 1100 pts minimum... yep definitely a good start.

you will notice at first that you will be outnumbered at all times. There isn't a single army that I can think of that will field fewer numbers than deathwing. But in exchange you get the cream of the marine crop.

Just to let you know a few basic tactics:

1. Don't let your self be assaulted, if they are willing to assault your termies, then they have something planned that you don't want to see happen (see hidden powerfist, genestealer/ork/khorne berzerker list or attempting to remove the rest of their army so you can't consolidate into close combat)

2. Only assault when you are ready. remember, with the exception of your assault termie squad, most of your terminators strike at I1. if your opponent can force you to make a lot of saving throws you are bound to fail a few of them.

3. Concentrate fire. don't spread your armies firepower over several units, pick the one that is right now the most dangerous to you and literally remove it. If one squads firing isn't enough to do the job have a second unit jump in.

I know that these are very basic things, but sometimes you look at your deathwing models and assume that they can handle anything (have had it happen to me the first couple of times I played them, ended up barely winning most of those when I should have massacred my opponent). The funny thing is that these should be thought of for any army you play, but triply so for deathwing. They might have a really good save and an invulnerable save to boot, and they might have a few nasty weapons, but they are still a fragile army that you need to be careful with.

But most importantly, enjoy. Deathwing is a lot of fun once you get the hand of them.
