Default War Talons Chapter

Trait: See but Don't be Seen
Weakness: We Stand Alone

Colors: A ghostly grey with black trim
Chapter Symbol: A three clawed slash mark

Founding: 3rd
Geneseed: Raven Guard

Home World:
The War Talons Chapter is not actually based upon its homeworld. Deep within the Eastern fringe is Von Kestrel's world. This is a world with a temperate climate and an atmosphere so pure and strong not even ancient Terra could rival its purity. Mutation is very rare there, almost unheard of infact. The weather is calm, predictable, and very mild. Water is easily accessible in the form of streams and ponds. Any where else this would sound like paradise. Anywhere else wouldn't be a death world.

There is no flat land on Von Kestrel's world. The entire planet is covered from one end to the other with steep, jagged mountains. Many of the mountains are volcanic, spewing clouds of poison gas into the sky, causing deadly but easily avoided acidic clouds that swiftly drop into the valleys, obliterating all life from what could easily be heaven on earth. The mountains are thick with goats, but also with fierce feral saber toothed lions that thankfully have not evolved into pack hunters.. yet. Jackals the size of wolves roam the lower slopes, killing the locals and the elk that live on the barren mountainous landscape.

These animals are only specs to the true rulers of Von Kestrel's world. This planet was the most recorded species of birds in the known galaxy. From sparrows to hawks to eagles of all shapes and sizes, the sky is packed full of winged creatures of great beauty and power. Some of these noble, fierce avians even form into "prides" or "herds." Their intelligence is much more evolved, their plumage and body language more refined, their calls more beautiful, their warcries more ferocious than any other birds on any other known planet. Except the Screamers. Screamers are the top of the food chain on Von Kestrel's world.

Screamers are also hell on wings. These massive birds resemble enormous goshawks, predatory birds so huge they can rip the turret off a tank with their talons. They have minds like buzz saws. These shaggy, louse ridden, pestilent raptors circle high above the mountain tops, watching for movement. If they see it they drop and try to turn the creature into a meal, no matter the odds. Their scream is so powerful it can cause a beast to become temporarily deaf. It can Nick a man unconscious. Thank fully these loathsome killers are relatively rare, but when they are in town, day or night, no one is safe under the open skies...

The men of Von Kestrel's world are still living in the stone age. They live their lives much like cave men, using primitive stone and wooden weapons to hunt and survive under the deadly skies of "The Bird Kingdom." They revere "the lord of winds" also known as "Emperor of all" as their father, but oddly enough not as a god. Only the greatest of hunters seek out "The Black Mountain," a mount made of sheer black stone, rumored to sit amongst the icy wastes of the North Pole, sitting on "the highest place in the world." If they survive this trek, following the stars and surviving the death-valleys then they will be given the chance to become "wind riders" themselves. The chance to join the War Talons Space Marine Chapter.

A top the black mountain at the center of the North Pole is a small grey Chapter Keep, nestled high above the clouds. Few ever reach its glorious gates though hundreds try every year. This keep is home to the disabled veterans of the Chapter, the ones injured beyond their ability to fight. This keep is where they turn men into much more.

Chapter Organisation:
The War Talons are arranged into twelve companies unlike most Space Marine Chapters. This is because they have two Scout Companies, and an Honor Company. The War Talons place immense emphasis on stealth, the sudden death in the night, and thus require longer periods of training from their Scouts. To make up for the prolonged training, they have twice as many scouts to work with. They also make much more frequent use of Scouts than most Chapters. The Honor Company is made up of the most ancient warriors of the chapter, fallen in battle but not badly enough to warrant one of the rare suites of Dreadnought armor. It is they who garrison the Chapter Keep to most, but a full 50 of the 100 marines within the Honor Company are veterans of the most vicious sort, in perfect health and trusted to defend the Chapter's future with their very lives...

The War Talons have no bikes. There home planet makes it impossible to teach this skill to the recruits. Despite this, the War Talons are known to be a hellishly fast force. They have a huge number of Land Speeders of every type and make extensive use of jump packs. Like their ancestors, the Raven Guard they make heavy use of drop pods and thunder hawks for insertion and surprise assaults.

The true home of the War Talons is the comet "Death Rake. A mass the size of a space hulk, yet shaped like a raptor's talon clawing for prey, this swift, deadly and massive vessel contains the chapter's strength. The rest of the fleet is made up of the twin battle barges Peregrine and Red Tail as well as a variety of Strike Cruisers, escort ships, and the Adeptus Mechanicus explorator ship Steel Edge.

Chapter Beliefs:

The War Talons are surprisingly enough, closer to the Black Templars in their beliefs in a way than they are to the Raven Guard. They see their purpose as being crusaders, bringing as many worlds to the Emperor's light as they can. They are simply much more subtle about it, in keeping with their ancestors. Actually, they are even more subtle. They prefer stealth and a silent death in the night to an outright battle in all but the most desperate circumstances. Cunning is this sombre chapter's chosen tool, not zeal. They strike beyond Imperial space, hunting the foul Xenos wherever they may be and trying to expand the Imperium.

Their spiritual beliefs are in keeping with the preheresy Raven Guard. Religion is the excuse of the ignorant to explain the world. The emperor is a great man, but still a man. They wish to illuminate all of humanity, to bring every world to compliance as their father's once did before the Horus Heresy. They honestly believe it can still be done. Upon one of their many travels they encountered the battered explorator vessel Steel Edge. It is the crew of this fine vessel that single handedly keeps the War Talons well supplied and with up to date technology. After saving the mechanicus vessel from the foul grip of orkish pirates, the captain of the Steel Edge made a devil's pact with the Chapter Master of the War Talons. Every Technology the War Talons discover they give to Steel Edge granting the captain untold glories amongst the machine cult every 5 decades when they return to dock and report in, the exact same way the Peregrine journeys to Von Kestrel's world to bring back the new Scouts... In return the tech priests help the badly overworked tech marines of the War Talons maintain the huge number of vehicles and ships they possess, as well as helping keep them well supplied. This relationship continues to this day.

Outside of the Steel Edge the War Talons do not regularly host Imperial officials amongst them. They figure if they do not flaunt their two extra companies of warriors, or their complete disbelief in the imperial religious creed, then they will not need to waste precious time arguing when they could, and should, be crusading.

What do you guys think? Cool Chapter?

With the men of the planet being primitive, it sounds a wee bit like Space Wolves

Even more primitive. Like cave drawings and no real written language primitive. No boats, no steal just sharp rocks

I like it, interesting, and good seeing people work out detailed fluff, like your planet. It's people like you that inspired me to creating my own chapter, and coming up with fluff for it.
Keep the good work up.

Its excellent work, I like it. Just an observation though; using the word 'disabled' to described the critically wounded veterans of the War Talons makes the small grey Chapter Keep atop the Black Mountain sound like an old person's home. It conjures images of old war vets scooting around on wheelchairs mumbling to themselves about the good old days or hobbling to the day room with their colostomy bags in hand to watch daytime TV. Perhaps you could take another look at this part and try to make them look more dignified and revered?

Also, you mentioned the ‘Devil’s pact’ between the captain of the Steel Edge and the War Talons after the ship was saved from Orkish pirates…it sounds as though this aging Captain has done very well out of his arrangement with the chapter, but what’s actually in it for the War Talons?

They get tech priest support in repairing and resupplying. They only have somany tech marines, and the Death Rake is a very large chunk of heavily modified rock.... before the pact the War Talons had all sorts of supply problems as their tech marines were spread thin.... hmmm I should add that in I think.

Definately. It's refreshing to see a Marine chapter that's not deeply suspicious or even hateful of outsiders.

This is really good!
I like it a lot, it's a fresh change over the ultramarines.

The only thing I find a quirk in is 12 companies...just doesn't seem right.

you could have a building that houses extra men for an education...For example...

Primitive men on planet>Recruited into Chapter>Education>Training>Scout Company>Company
Men who are in the "Education" area can also be used in Combat, and then count as an extra company.

Do you understand what I mean? If not, PM me or respond here, and I'll write it out...

It explains the extra company, as the extra company is being educated.

Cro-Magnon to Elite future-soldier. It's quite a leap. Training for most corps and regiments in the British army is about six months...training for the War Talons must take thirty odd years! If the average potential recruit is at the peak of physical condition when he is selected, that must put the youngest Marines in the battle companies in their early fifties! It's a good job Space Marines live a long time.

peak of physical condition would be in early twenties/late teens? I don't think early eighties, read the "space wolf" books, they shed alot of light on the intake of new marines, and also you could always say they had been hit hard by say the mighty pink fluffers of the chaos legion of abbadon the pink fluuferoo, and they need new recruits quickly
