Default Orbital Strikes - How do you eat yours?

People love Demonhunters because they get to call in orbital bombardment. Marines have got their treasured Damocles to do the very same thing. So as Marine players, how do you think an obital bombardment is best put to use? Do you use it as an area denial weapon to herd enemy forces where you want them? Do you target objectives as a failsafe ("If I can't have it, no one can!")? Do you plan your orbital strikes to flatten an area most likely to be occupied by the bulk of the enemy forces mid-game? Do you use them in an attempt to specifically destroy close support units (Basilisks/Whirlwinds etc.)? Or do your Orbital Strikes serve some other nefarious purpose not mentioned here?

EDIT - Oooo...I've just this moment devised the most evil, ruthless and utterly sadistic application of orbital bombardment conceivable. Field two small squads of scout snipers and a Damocles with the orbital strike option. Using Lysander for a massive, simultaneous Terminator teleport assault, deploy Termies in such a fashion as to herd enemy units away from them into one 'kill zone'. With a little luck the scouts might be able to pin some of the more troublesome units as the the Termies advance. The enemy will probably withdraw away from the Terminators (especially any assault Termies in the mix) and bunch up together. That's when you want to unleash the orbital strike! Bwhahaha! It's like the sheep dog trials...but with guns and bombs.

Hey...can you take an Orbital Strike as an allied Demonhunters choice? That'd be even better; two orbital strikes causing mayhem every turn! A huge vessel like the Phalanx should be able to deliver more firepower to the surface than lesser ships anyway. It'd just be a good way to represent it.

Unfortunately, you cannot take an orbital strike if you have Daemonhitners as allies, as you cannot take allied heavy support and that's what an orbital strike is. a heavy support choice... I would because I ally with Daemonhunters...

Damn! Ah, well...one orbital strike will have to do.

Heya Tom,

Most DH & WH players will tell you straight away that there are two ways to look at Orbital strikes (reliably):

1 - It's a total point sink; not worth wasting a precious heavy support slot on. But it's mad fun!!!
2 - It's a very useful tool for board control (and happens to save money not needing to buy a model!).

If you play on big terrain filled boards, the Strike will be very useful to you in missions and normal games. Don't expect to actually kill anything with it. It's very inaccurate. Very. Just look how much you scatter. Tons... loads. If you kill something. It will probably be because you scattered so far away from what you thought you were going to try to hit, that it hit something else opposite. And you'll be pleasantly surprised (unless it's something of your own...). It's useful however, because it allows you to control the board. You can get those boys out of cover real fast when a Str10 AP1 pie plate starts falling on that terrain piece every single turn, that they cannot stop and which doesn't even have a model for them to shoot at. It's just coming, every turn. So if you know there's a key bit of terrain on the board that your opponent may try to use to either (a) occupy a quarter safely in cover, (b) hide behind a strip of area terrain attempting to stay out of line of sight, (c) travel via some terrain to prevent walking out in the open, (d) some terrain that is near an objective marker that will be a good place to bunker down to try to take it on the last few turns.... In those cases, choose that terrain that looks promising and deny him his strategy, effecting his tactical game later. O.S.'s can literally effect your enemy's tempo as you foil plans from time to time.

Now, that's the Lance Strike (the other simply are inferior due to price vs. stats comparisons). There is one orbital strike which is very very useful however, that actually does hit models. But it's only available to the Witch Hunters and it only works against Psykers. The Psyk-out warhead is pretty powerful because it doesn't deal damage, but instead, rips psychic powers away from models. If you're facing Tzeentch or Eldar, for example, it's a great way to hose 200+ points of psychic powers from his arsenal. It works because the psyk-out warhead has a massive radius. Massive. You roll 2D6 after it scatters, and that's how many inches in every direction from the scatter point that the warhead effects. As you can imagine that can be as little as a 4 inch diameter but up to 24 inches in diameter. Typically you will have an 14 inch diameter on average. That's huge! Imagine a circle that is 12~20 inches wide. That's why this warhead works. Plus.. it's dirt cheap compared to the other warheads since it doesn't actually cause damage. Again, it only works against psychic enemies though.

Cheers!

Brilliant! Thanks for the advice. I'll finish my Damocles some time next week and now I know how to use an Orbital Strike (assuming I don't have enough points for a Vulture). Much appreciated.
