Default How do you use the Auspex?

Before anyone starts quoting me the rules for the Auspex I just want to make it clear that I have read them already it's just that one part seems unclear to me. The rules say that if, at the beginning of the game, there's an enemy unit within detection range the character with the Auspex (and his squad) can take a 'free' shot at them. What does it mean by "free shot"? Does this mean you can fire all your weapons at them irrespective of line of sight? Do you take this shot disregarding cover saves? Or does it just simply mean you can take a shot at them before the game starts, following all the normal rules for shooting? If that is the case I would think it would render the Auspex more or less useless because who in their right mind would deploy infiltrators within range and line of sight of anything remotely threatening?

Well there is my question...now some over-eager fool will jump in and start explaining all the rules for the Auspex, then someone will come in right after him and do exactly the same thing...just watch.

Seriously fellas, I only need that one question answering. Everything else I understand.

Just play it like a normal shooting phase, with cover and all that

But does "one free shot" mean a Predator Destuctor can fire both its Heavy Bolters and Autocannon or just one weapon of choice? I would normally say that units with an auspex are granted a single shooting round but I've never played with an auspex.

Only the Unit With the Auspex can fire... so if your Devastator Squad with 4 Missile Launchers, and their Sgt, have an Auspex, then they can fire the 4 Missile Launchers, and the Sgt's weapon at the infiltrators, that set up too close to you.

It's an odd piece of Wargear with the current infiltration rules.

It lets you spot 4D6" giving you a distance between 4 and 24" with an average of 14".

Ifilitraitors set up in one of two ways.

1) They set up more than 18" away and in line of sight.

In this case the Auspex can be useful with a lucky dice roll (i.e. 19+). If you succede and make that roll you can put some hurt on the infilitrating unit. It is however by no means a guarantee though.

2) They set up more than 12" inches away and out of line of sight.

If the infiltraitors set up out of line of sight you can't shoot them because you don't have line of sight! The only time you will be able to shoot them is with indirect fire weapons (a mortar in an IG team for example).

So yeah overall the Auspex is just sorta... fun?

I guess the auspex is there to punish opponents for being stupid (eg, infiltrating within firing range of the auspex unit). Besides, for its low point cost, you might as well throw one in against Night Lords or Scout detachments.

Pretty much. It really is a piece of gear that has slipped through the cracks. it was not really updated with the core rules so it now is lacking in ways. Only time it really is of use would be nightfight, where someone might try setting up closer under cover of darkness, and I believe in one of the scenerios where the one side tries to get as close as possible before the alarm is raised and the game started.
