Default The Ultimate Tactical Squad

OK! Look alive people!
I need opinions and options.
What would you say is the best capable tac. squad in a force. (Think several of these choices in one force).
I'm thinking about variables as:
1:Versatility
2:Numbers
3:Weapons/Upgrades
4:Survivability
5:Points
What would be most versatile and strong in an all coming tournament for example?

It depends on the rest of your army. You have to have a clear theme in your army. For example, there is no point having a heavy weapons Tac squad if the rest that yu have are all assault based. and viceversy. Tac squads do work best in 10s. Try to keep em cheap, and dont spend too much on your vet sarge (if you take one)

I won't say this is the best squad, but these kinda squads are used a lot:

Tactical squad @ 115 points:
- 4 Marines with Bolters
- 1 Marine with Lascannon
- 1 Marine with Plasma gun

A couple of these squads in a army and you have a pretty solid firebase.

As a rule: Shooting squads should be kept to a minimum number of models and assault squads should have more numbers of models. Also take even numbered squads (6, 8 & 10 men)

Edit: 350th post.

Well, there's a reason that nearly every space marine army in every tournament has a single thing in common:

Tac Space Marines x 5(6)
-Lascannon
-Plasma Gun

100 points for the 5 man version.
115 points for the 6 man version. The 6 man version allows better victory point potential.

Typically, you will not see Tacs used for combat support so much. You will see other units for that. You will mostly see Tacs in tourneys for pure cheap weapon supply, and scoring units that simply blast things off the board fast.

--- But it depends what you're looking to do. Are you looking to make a "do it all?" Because frankly, "do it all squads fail in tournaments in terms of winning. And I assume you want to win.

I'll wait to see what you think to go on

Cheers!

Of corse. I was a bit short on the use.
Their main role would be fire support.
The las/plas combination is the best for these uses, obviously.
And 6 models would seem to the most favorable due to vp and ld tests.
I would use two or three of these squads in a tounament together with
my scouts. I use 1 eightman team with snipers and a hb. And 1 squad for
assault. All cc with a sarge with a power weapon.
What do you think?

By posting an army list, we can better help you saying if it could work. You seem to have a pretty good firebase, but telling us what the rest of your army looks like could allows us to give better suggestions.

Personally I think using Scouts to do any kind of close combat is something you would want to avoid, if you're going to look for competition. There's a reason you rarely see scouts doing this, if at all, at tourneys. Scouts are support, not primary. Scouts do not take damage well. Scouts only deal damage. Scouts are nice that they infiltrate, but that doesn't put them in assault range any faster than your opponent lets them be. It merely makes them even easier to kill, with their 4+ saves. Sitting scouts, 6 men at the most, in cover with snipers is a great way to use them. There's a reason they work, and it's because they're out of the way, on a flank, and in cover. That's unattractive compared to those lascannons and plasmaguns that are pointed at them. So the scouts take less flak. Putting scouts up front, just puts a sign on their faces that reads "easy victory points and fast."

If you want combat, I'd suggest bikes. Otherwise, tac marines - and use a trait to get them infiltration.

-- Now, your whole list should probably be posted if you want to work it out. For example, taking troops with las/plas is one thing, but you can get an even better setup in the veteran squad, allowing for tank hunting squads of that setup (Str10 lascannon, Str8 plasma against armor). This also frees up troops to allow more tacs to move around. And if you combine it with infiltration, you can easily get a lot of great scoring units all over the board where you need them to be, without using scouts who inevitably cost more than tacs and survive less.

Cheers!

Well, it depends on what your opponent has...

...but when in doubt...10 bolters!

i always liked multi meltas in my squads and something like a hevey bolter is great- 7 marines w bolters=105pts
1 marine with h bolter= 20pts
1 marine with m melta= 25pts
veteran sergent with plasma pistol and power axe= 50pts

this comes to 200pts but it is a solid squad that is hard to beat ^-^

in my regular dark angels I have 5 troop choices, 4 of which are tactical marines.

squad one: 10 marines w/ missile launcher, meltagun, vet. sgt with plasma pistol and
power fist

squad two: same as squad one.

squad three: 10 marines w/ plasma cannon, meltagun, vet sgt. with plasma pistol and
chainsword.

squad four: 10 marines w/ heavy bolter, meltagun, vet sgt. with bolt pistol and
power fist.

I want to switch out two of the meltaguns with plasma guns, just don't have the plasma guns yet. otherwise I always follow the maxim: more marines, more better. full ten man squads hooahh!
