Default Shotgun Scouts

Hey all, i just bought two packets of two metal scouts with shotguns to expand my crusader squad. I just wanted to know, what are scouts with shotguns good at killing anyway?

Yes, they are even better then the ones with the pistols-ccw (in the shooting phase), just for the number of shots. On average they will kill more even if the shotgun is worse than the pistol.
However, when is time for cc, they are much worse than pistols-ccw scouts. :P

I generally use my neophytes with shotgun in a static squad with Initiates with bolters and a heavy weapon. The reason is that they are meatshield, they adsorb some damage and this makes the squad more resilient, without losing 24" bolter fire and the heavy weapon fire.
If an opponent tries to get close, I'll leap up to 12" and roll loads of dices with the rapid-firing bolter and the shotguns. > My philosophy here is: quantity, not quality.

I find them best used as a shock-troop squad; advance, pepper unit with lead, and charge. Obviously, this is best done against smaller, weaker units... don't try it against Terminators!

Also the metal Scouts are some of the best models GW has EVER made. The scouts with shotguns are IMHO the coolest looking of the metal scout models.

And my general philosophy is, if it looks totally kickass it HAS to do well in the game

Does that strategy hold up to table top experience?

I would never touch a scout shot gun with a 10 foot pole. There are better options all over instead of the shotgun, in my view.

What i'm thinking of doing is having one crusader squad with shotgun scouts and the other with CC, does that sound good or is it too mixed up?

I see no bebefit of having the scouts with anything else than the CCW/BP combo. They are there primarily for the extra attack, no?

I concur with Wargamer, shotgun scouts are great against T 3-4, 4+ or worse armor saves. The ability to move 6" shoot 2x and then assault can really whittle a squad down. Though I don't play marines I still think they are one of the better looking models, too bad shotguns are no longer under the old rules which was sweet. hmm, theoretically they should cause pinning if you think about 5-10 guys firing double 00 buckshot 10-20 times, makes me want to put my head down. Old rules they caused knockdown which was great, opponent had to spend a turn getting back up.

In that case, I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen a squad with shotgunners advance, pepper the squad with lead, and assault. And win.

These squads, in my experience, only act as a spring board for the enemy to advance into your troops. Either that or create a bogged down combat which nobody wins.

The second is more likely, since the enemy should be a weaker unit (both T and Sv) than yourself. And to use the scouts with shotguns on anything else would be folly.

I agree with Fiend when it comes to table top effectiveness of the shotgun. However, they look cool and are almost worth it for that reason alone.

Plus of course no-one ever uses shotguns for effectiveness in marine armies.
Bolter scouts are better at shooting and pistol/ccw scouts are better in combat. Shotgun scouts on the other hand are the jack-of-all trades and master of none. Better at shooting than pistol/ccw, but worse in assault. Conversely they are better in assault than bolters but worse at shooting.

It depends what you want. If you want an added bit of subjective coolness then go for shotguns. However, if you just want an "efficient" scout unit then choose pistol/ccw or bolters. Just don't mix bolters with combat weapon scouts!
