Default number of las cannons

for an all comers 1500pt army, how many las cannons would you generally inlcude? In reality the las cannons would only have to deal with the AV13/14 as i have 2 plasma and 4 assault cannons for dealing with medium.

currently i have 2 normal ones and 2 twin linked (1 dread mounted and one razorback mounted) i was tempted to drop the 2 devastator las cannons and replace them with plasma (more effective against marines and necrons... aswell as some bugs, but i dont want to get mutilated by land raiders and monoliths)

I don't think there's one set answer for a question like that. If you're fighting orks or 'nids, swap out the man-portable Lascannons for heavy bolters and possibly even your other lascannons too. But if you're fighting Imperial guard, especially an armoured company, then the more lascannons the merrier.

Either way, I think the Dreadnaught lascannons are too expensive. Check out the Dreadnaught assault cannon thread and see why (http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=17692.0).

I don't like lascannons on dreads either, I think assault cannons are much more flexible, and you limit the dread's potential if you give it TLLC.

I always prefer an assault cannon on a dread as well.

As for "How many lascannons for a take all comers army" I'd say no more than 2/3. My 1500pt list has just the 1, but I have 2 chainfists, 2 assault cannons and 2 meltaguns as well.

Be sure to upgrade the Dreadnaught to venerable and give it the tank hunters special skill. It's 30 points you will never regret spending. You just can't pass up the ability to convert an assault cannon armed light vehicle into a near-unkillable, close quarters monster, with the ability to close to assault range without getting blown to bits. Against vehicles, the tank hunter ability effectively turns that assault cannon into two short-range rending autocannons! And no doubt you've seen how effective autocannons can be against light armour (Eldar Falcons spring to mind). It's a transport killer (then you can gun down the survivors too).

yeah problem is that the dread is already stuck together, bought it pre built - so short of ripping it apart i am stuck with lascannon/missile launcher combo. believe me i am well aware of the benefits of assault cannons and given the choice that would be the way i'd go.

I think changing out the Lascannon devs for Plasma or rockets would be a good tactic here. Two twin-linked lascannons should be neough for most heavy armour. YOur not liekly to see more than three such armour values in a game anyhow and if you ahve enough midrange strength weaponry on the field you'll probably have a chance to hit side or back armour at some point.

One. I rarely have more than one Lascannon in 1,500pts.

There isn't really a set number of LC's you need, but you don't need too many of them. Maybe 3-4 maximum. You really only need maybe 2 to kill vehicles with high AV, but there is a high likeliness that they either fail to damage the enemy or get destroyed.
