Default Using Bikers?

Do you like to use space marine bikes in your army...

I've been taking a look at our clubs copy of the codex and they don't seem all that wow. No diference to normal squad in lots of respects;

Pros: +1 T, twin linked bolters, faster (lots)

Cons: more expensive, small units, no real firepower

Just wondering your views on them?

I use them for fluff reasons, plus the models are great looking and have many conversion possibilities.

Bikes are fantastic. Incredible speed allows them to get across the board and tie up enemy heavy weapons squads, making all those points spent on expensive anti-armor weapons go to waste. You can give them a 3+ invulnerable save just by zipping them around at high speed, guaranteeing that you can have a scoring unit anywhere on the board that you need it, when you need it. If you equip them with meltabombs and two flamers, you have an extremely versatile unit. They can then blow up vehicles with ease (five melta attacks are nothing to sneeze at!), decimate light infantry (two flamers? Yummy!), and do quite well against heavy infantry (T5!).

I think that the best use of bikers is to target the enemy's heavy weapons teams, so that the rest of your troops can advance a little safer. The turbo boost gets them accross the table quickly, then two meltas (three if you're Black Templars) and a multi-melta attack bike should be able to make short work of a tank or two, whilst the same set up plus a vet sgt with powerfist or powerweapon will lay waste to infantry with heavy weapons.

So I think the most versatile squad is:

5 bikes, vet sgt with powerfist, 2 meltas
attack bike, multi-melta

this will cripple tanks and small fire support squads (eg Havocs, Broadsides, Tankbustas).

If your opponent is infantry heavy, you could try:

5 bikes, vet sgt with powerfist/ power weapon, 2 flamers
attack bike, heavy bolter

good against targets such as a 10-man guard squad with a lascannon, or Eldar Guardians. you can even drop the flamers and rely on twin-linked bolter goodness for infantry you'd rather not charge (Tyranids).

Another great option is to mount a servo-harness armed techmarine on a bike and stick him in a bike squad that has a couple melta guns and a multi-melta.

They rush forward shooting twin-linked bolters or turbo boosting then they can either assault a heavy infantry unit or go tank hutning.

The techmarine gives them a huge edge in close combat and he helps ensure you get as many hits as possible with the melta weapons.

And if you use it as an assault unit he can fire his flamer before they assault.

is it definitely legal for a bike-mounted Techie to have a full harness?

There is no mention anywhere I know of about a full servo-harness limiting the options available for a techmarine.

I enjoy scout bikers a lot. I think generally, they are underrated. Think about it. Getting easily into close combat on round one. If terrain allows it of course.

And bikers in general. I always use a squad of regular bikers with an attack bike. All armed with melta. Earns back their points every time.

I don't believe it is legal for a Techmarine on a bike to use a full servo-harness. :'( I read that in a 4th Ed. FAQ but can't find it at the moment. But without the full servo-harness, the techmarine is still an awesome edition to a "bike army"

I use one in my Ravenwing, at the beginning of the battle he attaches himself to my three assault bikes to give me a better chance to take out tanks with the multi-meltas (I have a bad time rollin' to hit, so I can use the re-roll with his signum)
