Default command squad?

I'm unsure about Spacemarine command squads, do they count as an HQ choice? I have always played them that way but i'm not sure.

I would also like to ask if anyone takes them on a regualr bassis? I usually take them with my Chaplain and mount them in a Rhino, I pack as many power weapons and fists as possible into it then rush them into combat with the closesest unit. Its not a Gurantee succes that your Rhino will make it to your inteded target, but i get lucky most of the time

No, Command Squads by themselves do not count as an HQ choice. They are bought for another HQ choice (in your case a Chaplain) and those together count as one choice.

I don't use Command Squads because I play SW's :P, but depending on how they are armed they could be a huge waste or a great buy. From what I read in your post, your squad seems to fair pretty well.

No, I don't use Command squads, as mounting an IC within a Rhino is a bit too chancy for my taste. However, only Com squads allow access to tasty Vet skills for ICs.

BTW, do you play BAs or Vanilla/DIY Marines? If BAs, it easily explains the easy access to Powered weaponry, though you'd field them with Jump Packs. So, my guess' that you use a standard Marine Com squad, have a Vet Sarge, give Termie Honours all around, then grant to the specialists Power Weapons/Fists___they must be expensive as all Hell!!! You're definately lucky if their Rhino doesn't get shot to smithereens each and every times!! They'd probably be better in a Land Raider, with a LR Crusader serving as a red herring to draw away enemy fire___but even then it's too chancy.

I use them with a Chaplain whenever Ihave enough points. I usually mount my choppy squads in Land Raiders. It's kinda expensive but I think it dramatically increases my chances of getting the charge. I give my command squad termie honours and furious charge.

Yah, i never thought of a landraider now that you mention it. I placy Crimsonfists, so basically Vanilla. Yah it's an Expensive unit and suseptible to lots of fire but when it gets where it needs to be it definetly gets the job done.

Actually, I've found that command squads tend to work better if you're foot-slogging, because the specialists like the apothecary and the standard bearer actually get to use their abilities to help the advance of other squads around you (an apothecary supporting a terminator advance is very nice).

If you're looking for a bunch of power weapons to stick in a transport and run up in someone's face, I'd recommend a veteran squad instead; they save you some points you'd be spending on specialists like the apothecary, and let you take lightning claws without needing terminator honors first. Plus, if you really want to blow tons of points on them, you can give the whole squad terminator honors, but that is entirely up to you.

If you're looking for a ton of powerfists to run up into someone's face, I'd suggest Terminators.

We do (Space Wolves) have Command Squads in a way. How else do you explain the WG Terminators. They are taken (4 to 9)with a Character which happens to be an HQ choice.

I do take WG Body Guard (a Command Squad so to speak) with an HQ but not until 1500 because I take them as Terminators since there is no other way to get Terminators in a Space Wolf Army List. I don't take regular WG (power armor type). Why I don't know but I may look into it now.

I dont use any of the specialists in my command squad. I use them instead of (or as well as) because it allows me to give ICs furious charge and it does not take up another slot.

I don't use them; to be effective, they must cost a ton of points!

The basic Com squad per se isn't expensive___afterall, it's the equivalent of Tac squads, with more options, some being quite cheap (2 assault weapons, free BPs/CCWs), others not (specialists, termie honours, hvy weapons). It's the IC which makes it expensive from the get-go.
